Hi just wondering if anyone has the same problem,
i checked my water level in expansion tank on saturday and noticed it was very VERY low, and slight dripping from rad, also as you look at the engine the pipe on the left from water pump to rad was like blown up a little, i went to my local auto factors and got some rad seal topped up my water level and poured in exactly how instructions said, everything seemed fine after that, it took me on a 200 mile commute fine no problems, next day it was driving fine aswell, i came to check it tonight by the off chance and was very VERY low again and slight dripping from rad but pipes were fine, also as i have seen in previous topics a few people i can stop the fan with their hand...i can with mine too is this normall ?

it is the 2.5 bmw engine

thanks Jack

Hope its not the same sort of dreaded COOLANT LOSS that Gav keeps going on about......
On a more cheerful note, I've topped up the header tank regularly over the past 5 years, so not all coolant loss is from slipped liners.........more like leaky old rads and pipes!!!

Rad seal is not a good idea as you will see from other threads, better to fix the leak before you do major damage.

No you should not be able to easily stop the fan with the engine running, lucky you did not take your hand off! At the very least it should give you a serious bruise before you manage to stop it. Try sticking a rolled up newspaper into the blades when it's running, if it stops the viscous coupling is definately shot, it should just whack the newspaper out of the way.

It's a diesel, no slipped liners, just cracked heads LOL:eek::eek::eek:

you can stop a viscous fan only when the engine is cold as the engine warms up the viscous coupling then gradually gets more difficult to stop, this is so the fan does not cool the rad so enabling the engine to warm up quicker.

How often do you top yours up ?

stook a rolled up newspaper into the fan tonight after it had been running for a while, well....think iv found a new shredder !

right iv found out for sure what is happening, i pulled up on my drive this evening and notice water dripping fast from rad, opened the bonnet and saw that water was squirting out of the pipe which goes to the water pump, (the fat pipe on the left) the pipe looked pressured as it was blown up nearly twice the size as normal, any ideas anyone ?

thanks
