helloo to all,

today i had to change water pump and steering pump on my Def TD5. I am a bit upset at the total bill from the Land Rover dealer and I want to know if anybody has experience at rebuilding one of those or both. On each pump the problem is the bearing; can it be changed??

all the best

helloo to all,

When mine failed I just replaced the both at the same time. it was only summit like £20 for the water pump and around £100 for the power steering pump.

When changing the water pump is it worth doing the power steering pump at the same time... the motor has done 108,000 miles so it's probably due to fail soon anyway?!

If this is the case, is it easier to remove the whole frame... and then work on the pump replacements in the comfort of the work bench... this may remove the need to remove the oil filters etc... ???

My searching has thrown up excellent advice on each pump, but nothing combining both operations... and I'm not paying £300 for the garage to do it!

I have the parts... and having now done the job... bloody fiddly - I guess that's why the garages quoted so high/weren't interested.

Ended up leaving the frame/bracket in place... I didn't have any idea what gaskets/o rings I would have revealed by removing said frame/bracket, as it appears to be part of the cooling circuit.

The power steering pump turned out to be a doddle... just hope I have bled the system fully, enough fluid came out!

The water pump, as described in other posts (www.discovery2.co.uk - Workshop TD5 Water Pump Replacement.) was the fiddle... along with all the 'bleeding' coolant. Definitely a job for the ET long fingered... as opposed to my stubby bananas!

In answer to my original question I can say that there is no advantage in doing both pumps together - unless the frame/bracket is removed to do it.

If anyone can shed further light on the removal of both pumps complete with the frame/bracket it would be useful to post here for future reference.

Humpf.... maybe I should have shelled out for a garage to do the job... just checking my diff level this afternoon, only to see coolant leaking from the weep hole under the water pump!!

It's been fine, up 'till now... if I had made a mistake when fitting that would have shown up sooner??

Is this the classic burn of not fitting genuine!?

Any pointers would be appreciated... before I shell out for a genuine water pump - and then end up buggering that up!
