water problem

I'm going to look at a y reg Freelander on Sunday......but been told that it losses water through the water top of water resovir in the engine bay......can anyone please advise me on this.... many thanks..nigel

If it's a 1.8, then it's likely to be the head gasket. Unless you want a project, avoid it.

hi mate.....It is 1.8...yes....he only what's £200 for it.....would it be worth buying it and getting the work done.......

The reservoir is a ball shaped plastic tank bolted on the top of the drivers side suspension in the engine bay. What you've been told does happen to Freelanders, they get small cracks on the tank around the cap and water can escape under pressure. Also the cap may be holding the wrong pressure.

As has been said though - on the 1.8, it is likely to be the head gasket.

If it is the head gasket it depends (as well as other things) on whether you are going to fix it yourself as to whether its a good buy. If you are going to do it yourself then it is a cheap buy - there are lots of people on here who have changed the gaskets so there is lots of advice on how to do it, what NOT to do and which gasket to use. If you are going to pay someone to do it, then you will probably find a working example with easier home fixes on eBay or Gumtree.

There is also the possibility that you get a working one and the HG goes 2 weeks later

When buying - learn up beforehand how the Freelander transmission works - learn how the VCU and IRD work. Find out about the importance of the VCU not being to stiff and having matching tyres. Its easy to find on here or a quick Google search. It will help prevent you from buying a 2WD Freelander or one that will soon, and have expensive repair bills.

thank you for all your replies.....I've seen the freelander today and it looks like there is something missing off the cap....can someone please show me a picture of the reservoir cap if possible..

The cap is fine, looking at it. What does the coolant bottle look like?

he's changed the bottle....no cracks in it.....oil cap clean dip stick clean no white mayo.

So if there's a new coolant reservoir and it's blowing it's coolant, then it's likely that the head gasket has failed.

iv decided not to get this one I'll keep looking after Christmas.
