hi guys,
Any help plz...i drive a 2005 freelander 1800 petrol...temp gauge shootin up to max with red light on at 65...switch ignition off and back on light has disappeared , drove car today for 23 miles at 55 no probs..increased to 60+ light back on..all this time fans workin..thanx jimmy.
 
Ok... I'm gonna say the HG isn't in such a good way from overheat so:
Whats the oil look like?
Whats the coolant look like?

If there normal then it isn't likely to have blown it so check:

Can you replicate the fault without moving the vehicle (revving it?), if so stick a temperature gauge in the water when the warning light is on, rule out the temperature sender switch, if thats ok then the sender is alright, flush the cooling system with rad flush, take both hoses off the radiator and run water through it with a garden hose - check its not blocked, if it isn't check the thermostat, after that... well someone else will be able to help better, it's nearly 10 months since i've touched a 1.8. :D

So many little things that could possibly be wrong with it...

As I said, somebody will know much much much more than I do (not hard lol!) and will be able to help you a lot more in depth.
