Hi again - any suggestions?
Just replaced the head gasket (had a separate thread on that). Car starts fine now but immediately revs to 4.5K. Have checked throttle linkage, valve in throttle housing and followed the reset procedure for the TPS – any ideas? If I do press on the accelerator it revs further
Don’t really want to start it again without being able to control the revs
Thanks

I had similar prob on a p38 after changing the coil packs... i disconected the battery and all wuz well... dunno bout a gaylander tho :D

You've checked the common problems.
Have you checked the simples?
Is there some slack in the throttle linkage? (should be some)
Should even start and tick over with linkage off - throttle against the stop.
Does the butterfly close fully? (air intake pipe off look to check)
Mark the shaft and check if it's moved when you start.
Is the idle valve really closing onto it's seat? (>4k seems a bit much for the valve tho')
Something has to be letting all that air in to let it go that quick?

Thanks for the ‘check the simples’ nudge.
When I checked the throttle linkage I found that the plastic actuator where the throttle cable sits (at the throttle housing) is all broken and the nipple at the end of the cable is only supported by the remaining bit of the moulding. Worked fine like this for the past 18 months. The valve appeared (and sounded) to be closing but must of being held slightly open – took the cable off and starts and ticks over OK. Guess when I took the inlet manifold off recently the cable must have moved position due to the broken actuator. Now just a small oil leak to resolve and off we go (until the next bit falls off!)

Matches and petrol back on the shelf for a while – thanks eveyone
