Hi Guy's this is my first post and I hope you can give me some good advice.

We've got a Y Reg Freelander 1.8 GS. The Mrs was driving it today when she heard a noise and felt a jolt that moved her forward in the seat. Looking underneath the VCU damper outer ring was resting on the rear prop shaft.

Now, I've pushed the ring back on to stop the rattling and driven it home slowly, about three miles. But the local garage can't look at it for another 12 days or so and reading some of the other threads it sounds like it could be a bit nasty.

Driving it home it felt OK and there wasn't any undue noise but something made it come off.

Does anyone know what would cause the outer ring to come off like it has?

Thanks

I don't think its that simple to slip off the old damper and replace with a new one.I think you'll have to remove at least one bearing, might aswell replace both of them at the same time. You could angle grind it off,and leave it off till you've got the parts and time to do it yourself.

It's only fourteen bolts to drop the prop out for now.

Once it's out you can separate the the rear from the VCU with one further bolt (hidden in the forks of the UJ) and a bit of levering, and get a new ring/bolts/VCU depending on what's rusted out at you leisure.

That happened to my vcu damper t'other day.
I was thinking of cutting the ring once I got home or pumping silicone between the outer and inner ring. Its a tight fit, when it came off I stopped straight away and whacked the ring back on and drove the 12+ miles home.
I took the easy option and removed the prop shaft until I fix the leaking diff. When I do refit the prop I will try the silicone to bond the damper ring before I fork out for a new one.

Make sure yu get the correct one - I think the V6 is different from others.

dont forget it is held on with 3 bolts.

Many have cut it off and not replaced it. Been ok. Others have replaced theirs. I guess it depends if you notice the difference of it being fitted or not. v6 doesn't have a damper.
