Isn't the front-rear gearing slightly different, requiring some slip of the VCU? In which case, locking the centre like that shouldn't be done unless the surface really is slippery. Then again, that applies to any centre diff lock. The other thing that applies is that you will get stuck with two wheels driving on one side, like a Defender.

You can get a VCU reconditioned, plus bearings, for around £265. It will fit perfectly, and you will be running the vehicle as intended by the design engineers. Done at the usual 100k+ miles, it will probably outlast the car. Changing over means swapping an automatic, limited slip differential for a manual locking one. This means instead of having a drive system that responds quickly to slip, you have to rely on the driver realising they're stuck.

That said, if a Tegralok is comparable in price and ease of fitting, it might be worth a try. I guess you could save on tyres, not having to be so careful about swapping them evenly, and there won't be a 'time bomb' of IRD/diff mess waiting to happen...
