Hi all,
New to site so if not in right place sorry in advance,I own a 1998 p38 2.5 dse auto with a few electrical faults and would like to know if anyone can point me in the right direction for a fix,the faults are:-

front doors wont lock/unlock by remote, rear doors work fine
cruise control not working
drivers side of heated front screen not heating, passenger side works fine
driver seat heater not working, passenger side fine.

are these faults connected or just random ..

Any advice will be appreciated,

Regards Seabazz.

No, you are in the right place but it's often worthwhile to do a search first. All of the problems you have are well covered. In fairness though they are quite common.

Briefly the screen is covered by two separate fuses as are the seat heaters but usually you find it's the seat heating element away and most often the driver's one as that gets the most flexing. The door locks can be the units inside the door or just a broken wire. Is the tailgate unlocking (as that's connected to the driver's door). The cruise control on a diesel is different from the petrol I think and this was covered very recently and in depth. On mine (petrol) it was a perished hose at the actuator.

many thanks you wouldnt happen to know which fuse/fuses to check ??

Regards seabazz
if any fuses are gone the message centre will normally tell you
the screen problem is likely to be the elements gone on that side
i wouldnt bother about the seat heaters more trouble than they are worth unless you are confident in stripping down the seat to replace the element,
any problem is a process of elimination if you study the problem and understand how each system works you stand a chance of repairing it :)

as has been said the problems are common and all fixable I did my seats in about an hour a door the biggest problem you have is the locking - it could be a problem with the lock actuators with the outstations the loom or the becm the fault if it is the becm could be from the fuse box under the bonnet have look on Range Rovers also search on here - alot of reading but you will get the answers good luck

many thanks to all for your replies there are no messages about fuses, so I will spend some time reading other threads on this site see what I can learn....once again thanks

Having read the other threads on the subject of the heated screen problem, does any one know where /how to check the resistance of the screen heater elements, many thanks for any advice given,

regards seabazz

The screen heaters are very delicate and are sided as you will have found. Even when both sides are working there are usually some of the wires not working which gives you stripes. If the whole side is gone it does look like the fuse for that side. Checking the resistance is possible but fiddly. Not only would you have to strip it down as though you were going to replace the screen you'd have to find the terminal ends to do your check. If you're going to that stage you'd be as well getting the screen changed under the insurance but then it would have to be broken in some way. Fuses 30 and 32 in the under bonnet fuse box are the screen heaters so change them around and try again before you go any further. A new fuse is cheaper than fiddling under the dash to find the terminals.

is it not possible to check the resistance for the screen from the output of the relay /fusebox housing to earth ?

Could get a rogue reading but try it anyway. Swapping fuses is easy though. At least that would be something ruled out and you then go further. How about the other faults? Cruise control and door locks?
