I'm new to the forum and I've recently come across the opportunity to buy a 1998 Discovery 300tdi XS model and need advice to how much you guys think it's worth?

It has genuine 41k miles with all MOTs
Service history
Timing belt done approx 6k miles ago

Downsides
Small patch of corrosion on driver side rear wheel arch in the door shut area.#
Corrosion on the bottom of the rear door
Needs new rear bumper
Both swivel balls are leaking

So... how much would it be worth?

Yes ive had it over the pit. All the out riggers and chassis all seems solid. The only thing I havent looked at (as I found out after) is under the boot carpet.

Difficult this, its down to what you want to pay for it. Mine was 41k when I got it three years ago has been reliable and its just about rust free, I paid £3.5k not what most people would pay, but I wanted a low milage low rust car to last 3-5 years without to much hastle. Ok I did not expect the missus to drive it into a tree and the sahara to buff the paintwork flat, but it still runs lovely and I have no issues with it.

So... how much would it be worth?

On the face of it it sounds attractive but these are REALLY known for being rust buckets. Here's a list of places to check, starting from the front:

1. Front body supports under the slam panel;

2. Battery box area;

3. front inner wings;

4. A, B, & C post bottoms;

5. Inner and outer sills;

6. rear wheel arches, particularly around the seatbelt mounts;

7. Boot floor and side panels - you need to lift the carpet and rubber mat to check properly;

8. Rear crossmember and body mounts.

As to valuation, at this age it is entirely dependant on two things:

1. Condition; &

2. What you are prepared to pay for it.

Incidentally, is there documentary proof to support the low-mileage claims?

No rust on mine and just past its mot, but then it would as I only did 1098 miles from last years mot.
Now only 44170 miles on the clock and the only time a spanner has been used on the engine is to replace a failed water pump and change the spark plugs and oil, so may be worth a couple of grand now, I've wrote off the 32 grand I paid for my disco years ago.

Will soon have spend £400 to replace four tyres, the front ones are 12years old and have a few fine cracks where the tread meets the side wall notwhat you want on a 100mph vehicle.
