I may have the chance to get a MY 2000 Disco II V8 at just to get it gone for the current owner. I have been told the engine is knackered but that everything else is ok. It has been stood for a year or two but the owner has no plans for it other than to weigh it in eventually.

What I am wondering is how much it would cost to get a 4.0 V8 lump for it and whether or not it would be better and easier to break it instead. The only worry is that in breaking it, the money spinner (engine) is U/S.

Any ideas? IMO it would be great to get it back on the road but I'm not sure it's financially viable.

Forgot to say it has an LPG conversion

If you're handy with the spanners and stuff you should be able to stick another engine in it (if the original one can't be repaired) and sort any other bits, there's plenty info on here for that. No idea what a second hand engine would cost but supposing you spend a grand sorting it out and put an MOT on it then you have a vehicle worth quite a bit more than that. On the other hand if you do it because it's your interest/hobby/passion etc then it doesn't usually matter about the cost. Better to save one than to scrap it.

I enjoy tinkering but time normally doesn't allow as I have my own business. I have a great local LR mechanic with a low labour rate £27 per hour so would get him to to the bits I don't have time for. I would love to do it as a project and as you say - better to save one than to scrap one!

It would be a huge shame to scrap it and if you dont have the skills Im sure there are others on here who would like the challenge, or parts or even help you do it...? However I would say get it up on a ramp and check it out first, if its been sat there for 1 or 2 years then there is more than likely a substantial amount of rust damage, and rot!

And secondly, who would leave it out in the cold like that:( poor old girl!

If they charge £27 per hour could get them to put a used engine in for 2/3 days labour! and probably looking about £500-£1000 for a good low mileage v8 at a guess, defiantly fix it! :)

Good shout to check the condition of the rot etc. But then again, if I tow it away for a couple of hundred quid and it turns out to be a nail then that's when it gets broken I guess. Will have to chat to the owner more next week and see what comes of it. Would be nice to bring the old girl back to life!

Even if it does turn out to be a nail, just fix it. Or, as has been suggested, give someone else the chance to have a go at it. Have a good look round it, maybe even put some pictures on here and I'm sure others will cast their opinion, then make an offer. If he's just going to weigh it in anyway then surely what ever he'd get for weighing it in minus £20 for taking it away is reasonable enough.

If its cheap then dont worry about the engine being U/S as all the other parts will be worth a good amout the gearbox and axels transfer box interior and panelwork will fetch good money.
IMO V8 engines dont fetch good money unless its a really good one as most will need work.

Apparently the V5 has been misplaced. Anyone know what is needed for a replacement? I'm guessing just a bill of sale to prove new ownership??

Spoken to them today and they want £500 for it with knackered engine. Apparently 'rear airbags' failed too - I take it they mean the air suspension? Not had a Disco 2 so not sure what suspension set up they have?
