Hi,

Hoping someone could advise as I don't confess to being mechanically minded at all.

Bought a D2 V8 ES last week and on the test drive noticed a ticking sound on acceleration (not there on idle). The dealer said it was normal for a Disco V8.

But its so noticable, I've had 4.0 Litre V8's in the past and never heard this ticking noise, is it pinking? Its so noticable even my wife noticed!

The ticking gets louder (and quicker) the harder you accelerate, and its definately coming from the engine bay.

Any ideas?

If it does it worse under load (accellerating hard) it could be an exhaust manifold gasket blowing, check for sighns of of soot depossits around the joint between the cylinder head and the manifold, could also be a cracked manifold.

Thanks guys I appreciate the replies, I just rang my local LR service centre and they say its probably the timing belt and it shouldnt be driven, the guy I bought the car runs his own dealership and gave me a 28 major defect warranty, do you think the timing belt would be covered under this, or would this be classed as maintenance?

If it is the timing belt, surely the ticking noise is result of damage happening to the engine now?

I haven't spoke to the dealer yet as I wanted to get all my facts together first..

Read the warranty...i reckon, and i hope i'm wrong, that it'll be classed as maintenance...gulp. Good luck.

EDIT. Just seen you only bought this a week ago...the dealer will have known it was due and therefore sold you something 'not fit for purpose'. Get him to change it and fix the broken bits under warranty.

A, As you can see there are several things this ticking could be.
B, Whether it's covered by his waranty or not. He lied telling you they all did it.:mad:

As you haven't bought the car privately, irrespective of any warranty given if the car is not fit for purpose the dealer must repair the motor for 6 months from date of purchase at their cost, this applies to any fault's that you believe where there when you bought it. As you've only had it a week get them to repair or refund you.

Hate to say this but there sre LR service centres, and LR service centres, take advice with pinch of salt, One LR service centre, think it was Droitwich told me (without even seeing it) that my 1999 TD5 with a factory fitted alarm/immobilizer didn't have a factory fitted alarm/immobilizer.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

If the exhaust manifold gasket(s) are blowing you would likely hear it at idle, you may also get some pops/bangs on the overrun.

If the ticking is more noticeable when the engine is in a low rpm/high load scenario then you are more than likely getting pre-ignition/pinking which is a hell of a lot more serious than a leaking manifold gasket.

Dewin,

Thanks for the Cosumer Direct link really useful..

I'm due to take it to a LR engineer to take a look at tomorrow..

Fingers crossed..

Hi there,
I'm no expert but your ticking noise may be a blocked hydraulic tappet. There are additives you can add to the engine oil which claim to restore proper tappet function. Hope this helps.

What does it tell you about your local LR place if they told you that your V8 has a timing belt and that it's causing a ticking noise? Jeezus.

OK, got it back from LR service centre, and they believe its the exhaust manifold..

Since I've had the car I said on several occassions while driving it, there's a smell of exhaust in the cabin, I'm assuming this is the case...

OK back to the dealership where I got it to see if they can help..

My experience of warranties is not good. On any car over 80K the insurance company says that its `wear and tear' regardless of whether that fault is covered in the policy or not. Take it straight back to the dealer. You have the right under sale of goods act to try and negate the sale and get back your trade in as a last resort if all else fails, but hope you dont have to go that far.

Any person purporting to be a professional and representing themselves as such is bound in law to provide a level of service commensurate with that being offered.
For example - it is not acceptable for a dealer or his representative to pass off patent or latent defects as being inherent to a particular vehicle on an ad hoc basis.
The vehicle in question was not designed to operate in the manner in which you describe and is therefore patently defective.
The "Dealer" in his professional capacity should have recognised this - especially as it was raised as an issue prior to purchase.
I would however, urge caution at this stage as by your actions you yourself have acknowledged that the vehicle is defective.
Further use could be construed as exacerbating the existing problem or creating further problems / expense.
To avoid this you would need to inform the dealer in writing of your concerns, detailing the purchase date and indicated mileage and the current mileage.
You need to outline the nature of your dispute, the required outcome and whether the dealer in his professional opinion would advise further use of the vehicle in its current condition. You will need this in writing should you wish to use this in any future litigation process.

The above should be enough to make the dealer realise that you mean business and hopefully realise an amicable conclusion.
Tact, discretion and maintaining a polite disposition will assist in your dealings; it is always quicker and easier to attain a satisfactory conclusion if you can maintain a friendly dialogue with the dealer.

If all else fails please see the attached link to the "sale of goods act" but hopefully it will not come to that :).

Kind regards, William Rafferty BSc Hons.

Idle and trailing throttle (over run) are both the times you probably won't hear it, you will possible get popping through the exhaust but with a propper exhaust fitted you probably wouldn't notice it.

The problem with the warrenty is the wording 28 major defects this probably wouldn't be seen as a major defect, but if he's a reputable dealer (there are some around) he may get it fixed as good will, how long ago was it mot'd cos that would probably have upset the emmissions
