Updated thread - overheating Td5 when towing

At long last, and some five weeks AWL at the local Irish Mechanics, my Defender Td5 90 is back home

I had overheating issue when towing and the it started to cut out completely and without warning . Once cool the engine would restart but only for a short period. From cold, it would run on tick over for twenty minutes and then cut out.

After some digging around under the bonnet, the wiring loom to the injectors was found have some oil which appears to have crept up the interior of the cable and up to the ECM. Replaced the wiring loom and found that the fuel filter had broken down and plastic like bits had entered into the fuel lines.

I'm a bit surprised because the filter was replaced during the last service. But, I'm back on the road again with a modest bill. Fingers crossed for my next towing session on Friday.

Yeaaah, good news.

The oil at the red plug is a known issue on the TD5. Did they replace the injector loom?

Broken filter internals, from a known supplier? if yes who?

Yes they did change the loom, but I can't remember who the supplier of the filter was. I think that I bought a service kit which included all of the filters that I needed.

I've heard of Britpart fuel filters for Td4 Freelanders collapsing internally. Also seen it myself (suspected by a forum member) and in real life:

I replaced the wife's Freelander's fuel filter with a Britpart one, and soon after the fuel pump failed. Took out BP filter, only a few weeks old, and couldn't even blow through it.

I now use Mahle filters.

That's well worth remembering. Where do you get your Mahle filters from? I'm always looking for a good buy, but often the lower price is directly related to the quality
