Hi, The more i think about my head-gasket problem, it seems that my righthand head has been skimmed, sharper edges than L/hand one, also different gaskets which i felt confirmed this,(so i think its going to be a block problem, but nothing to lose i will just re-assemble then keep my fingers crosssed. First question from the photo which is top face of the gasket (i think its bottom face in the picture), also i still want some advice about the Hyd-tappets " Do i re-assemble them all pushed back"

Morning Colin..............
If orientation of the gasket is important, it will be marked "TOP" on one face.

The design of the hydraulic tappet is that there is a spring inside which holds it in the up position. Place the tappets in a container of oil or STP with the push rod seat uppermost and prime them by pushing the seat down a few times with a bar or similar.
Check the wear pattern on the camshaft contact face against those examples shown on RAVE or the RPI website, also examine for signs of cracking on the contact face.

Sorry Irish have to disagree with that. The spring inside is to hold the ball on the oneway valve, soak them in STP yes but do not get STP inside them. It is too thick and makes retracting them difficult. The tappets must be fully retracted before fitting them in the engine with no oil in the pressure chamber at all.

Hi, Thanks for replys!!! There is no indication which is the "TOP" face, because the faces are different i feel there must be a "TOP" and "BOTTOM" face, i have decided not to use any sealant on the gaskets, my only other problem i have is the bolts on the R/H exhaust manifold the socket just turning on bolt, buying some grip sockets from Machine Mart, need to get it off, cant get the old cylinder bolts pass the manifold casing.

I would say the one at the top of your photo is the top side,as the bottom one has a strip of sealer around it,and i would say that side to the block would to be best. And if your not sure about the block face and hads etc i would use some wellseal,as this will help seal any small imperfections. Of course this is my humble opinion, but it worked for me on two Rover V8s so far.

I fitted 2, black side up. Had to replace both within 2 weeks. 1 never run right and was plagued with running problems causing a massive LPG backfire which blew the head gasket out from between the head and the block and the other side leaked out on the air side making the car sound like the exhaust was blowing. This was also the head gasket.

Its no coincidence that when you fit the left hand gasket, it will only go one way and clear the dipstick tube.

Shiney side up!!!!!!
