Hi, well everything went ok, removed heads with maniflods attached, some of the bolts dont come all the way out doing it this way ( socket and bolts binds on manifods) Was hoping to find some damage to gaskets, liners are ok. I would like some advice!!!! 1, should i use "Wellseal on the head-gaskets.... 2 Im having to wash my Hyd Tappets, so on replacing do i just make sure they are all pushed right back and dip in STP, 3 What do i use to clean pistons bores and valve areas (2nd bore righthand Head is different to the others, and some rust specks in the bore. 4, is thre any harm in rotating engine to inspect bores, shouldnt matter on re-assembling right? 5, Can i remove the sump on this model from underneath full of custard!

hi colin are you saying gaskets where ok, as in not blown? as that piston looks washed to me..

Hi, Yes, the gaskets were intacted, not broken through, if anything i thought the seal at the back bores looked bad, righthand side head is flat, i agree that bore looks cleaner!!!!! The car failed its MOT on emissions only, and the examiner knew it wasnt firing right, hence head-gaskets.

That bore has had water in it for sure, its "steam cleaned" the piston crown. Make sure all liners are the same height,ie check that one hasnt dropped. Wouldnt bother cleaning other pistons and bores as you could drop crap etc into bore and make it worse. If your gona decoke the heads then remove valves and note which cyl they came from, i gently use a wire wheel to clean the backs of the vales then grind them in with course and fine paste. The combustion chamber can also be cleaned up with a wire wheel on a drill but be VERY careful not to damage head face. Wellseal was recommened to me by a landy specalist, used it on my 4.6 hse (comp gaskets) and my 4.2 hotrod (tin gaskets) and had no problems with either. If the sump is full of mayo you have had a lot of water in the oil, you will need to flush it out well.

I have never seen so much mayo/custard in the rocker covers and like you say in the sump.

I would try and find out where its mixing before you put all back together!

tbh i would not bother putting it back together, i think you going to find you may need a block. mine was not as bad as that but still needed a block.. goodluck..

Get the head pressure tested, and hope its that and not the block. I would find out about sealant on the gaskit, did my pajero last year and it went on dry, same as my mates ford that I did the year before. Can't think of any modern engines that recommend sealant on the gaskit but as I have never done a V8 could be totally wrong. Hopefully there's someone here who works on them regulary to confirm or tell me I'm wrong.
Hope it works out

Hi
Another thought, I've seen engines like that before and it was the oil cooler that was leaking. But that was on VW's so don't know if it happens on LR's.

Cheers

Fair comment about mayo but oil coolers leaking don't steam clean pistons.

Yes but when I've seen it on VW's the crap mayo oil causes head gasket failure and loads of other problems if not caught early enough.

Yes but the oil cooler leaking would just stop the chassis from rusting on a P38 it's not in the radiator.

Ive done loads of head gaskets in my time and yes all fitted dry even Rover V8 ones. However, on the recomendation of my very trusted friend i have now used it twice on my own V8s with no problems.
Stag WellSeal jointing compound 500ml
Google it and make up your own mind, but it worked for me.

OK thanks for that just wanted to know about the wellseal, was thinking of getting a P6 V8 as a project at some time does this have the same water way in the block.

sort of , not such bad problem on the 3.5 engine like in the p5 but it does have other joys like crap oil stem seals and poor build tolerances

got one of those in a granada :D or at least thats what i was promised it was out of, ditched the EFI for twin su's. class. cant keep oil in the box now

I hear that , my lt95 is a bit leaky :p

How did tey stiffen the block on the vitess then?

I though the basics , ie block and heads of all rover v8's of the same year were the same??
