... I'm used to my 38 dropping the suspension, but since I rebuilt the pump and valve block....and perhaps, maybe, just a tiny bit "fiddled" with the heights, is it normal for it to be driven onto a drop kerb, up onto the full height, for it to go from "standard height" to "full height" just coz?? :D

George sits at full height (as is my wish) on parking overnight. When going over 30mph, she drops to standard height as you'd expect. But recently, she's started going up rather than down :p For no apparent reason other than the drop kerb is low, but parking on the high end produces a queer problem in that she raises herself up and sits there like the queen of cars :eek::D:cool:

It's not a problem, I'm just curious what I may have done wrong (or right, given different angles) o_O
 
Not sure if I understand exactly what you mean. Do you mean that the light for extended height comes on when you drive onto a kerb?? If so, no, not normal.

Can you post your target heights on here?

No it won't only time car goes up to extra extended is when chassis is grounded and traction is lost. Even then it goes to access first. He has more than likely set the heights incorrectly, too close to minima or maxima for that particular height and they are overlapping. Also damp on white plug in passenger foot well can cause spurious height signals to be sent to ECU. That plug is the interface from height selector switch to ECU.

I set the heights pretty much as they were before, except I tidied them up if that makes sense?

She always sat low at the drivers rear and high at the passenger front. So I checked the heights and the driver rear was 7 lower than the passenger rear :eek: so I raised it by 3 and lowered the other by 2 which levelled it then programmed it in. The front was 1 or 2 out so I evened them. I didn't go mad, I just lowered then by 1 or 2, allowed her to go through each step in height, she would adjust, I checked the actual against what I set and they were pretty much spot on. I checked again next day same thing, nothing had moved. She goes through all the motions I request and it's bloody quick to respond.

Yesterday, I set full height and drove off. Once I went over 30mph, she went down to standard height and stayed there. But I drove into a drop kerb, then along until the kerb rose up and she started tilting, driver side down. Next thing I know she's raised up to full height that I'd originally set. I had the button in that stops adjustment (can't remember what its called, looks like a flat tyre :p).

I drove home later and was under 30mph so nothings changed, she's still at full height this morning.... But my misfire was slightly worse last night (I haven't noticed if it changes at different heights o_O).

You cannot drive at more than 35 MPH in extended mode. The system will not allow it. Car should be used at standard height. Above 50 MPH for 30 seconds it will drop it to motorway. In that mode below 35 MPH for 30 seconds it will rise to standard. Extended is only used for wading. There are parameters of maximum and minimum bit counts for each height, you CANNOT exceed them whilst setting ride heights or the system will default to presets and you will have to start again. When setting heights DO NOT go within 10 bits of upper and lower allowable bit counts for that particular height, although access is a little more tolerant. You can select motorway height by pressing EAS lock button then selecting motorway, it will stay at that height until the EAS lock button is disengaged.

I didn't set it 10 bits out, like I said, the most was 7 between the rears. The front (always did) sits slightly higher, but I lowered everything by one or two bits all round.

I'll maybe take her to Hamish if she misbehaves today. I'll set her at standard and leave the EAS lock "off" and see what happens. One thing, I have had the "motorway" button on since I got the car. I never ever switched it off until I plugged in to unlock the EAS after the rebuild of pump & valve block.
 
So, my question should be, if the fronts are higher than the rears by say 15 bits, is that bad or normal? I cant remember the exact numbers, but I think the rears (full height setting) were 104 and the fronts 110 or thereabout.... I really cant remember o_O

I don't think you are quite understanding what i am saying. See this.

Modifying Stored Heights: Once you have recorded the physical and virtual measurements for each of the four corners and each of the stored height profiles, then you are ready to begin making changes. Rules: The EAS computer has internal programmatic limits to how far you can change each of the stored height values. For example if you tried to configure the access height as high as the extended profile, the EAS computer would not allow that change. When the internal programmatic limits have been exceeded, the EAS will go into Hard Fault and reset all of the stored height profiles to a factory default. The limits to the Virtual number are listed below. If they are exceeded, the EAS will go into fault and you will have to start all over again with the process.

Extended. Front 120-180. Rear 105-150
Standard. Front 95-150. Rear 85-130
Low. Front 75-140. Rear 75-120
Access. Front 50-110. Rear 50-100


You will notice that the Front range of values for the EAS stored height profiles is different from the Rear range of values. This is normal. The Front EAS Sensor and Sensor arm position is different from the Rear. This accounts for the difference in the number for each of the stored height profiles. The Front numbers do not need to be made to match the rear! This will cause problems.

It's not a problem, I'm just curious what I may have done wrong (or right, given different angles) o_O
not forgetting that if the air exhaust is blocked - or often freezes up it will not allow the air to escape thus reaching extended height! hope this helps if I understand your dilemma
 
Hi Wammers, I'll need to plug in a check, but those figures look within my cars parameters from what I recall. I was just at hospital for physio...well, that's what they called it :( Looks like I am NOT going to get an operation for the torn muscle! I asked about the pain? Shoulder Class! Is it like cooking class? Fucking useless :( Looks like I'll be taking a trip to Lithuania to get the mess sorted. Honestly, it's like broken glass rubbing inside my arm and at night, if I don't take the pain killers, it's like being repeatedly stabbed in the shoulder :(

I digress, nothing frozen or blocked... I rebuilt the whole valve block last week :cool:

She's working fine otherwise. Perhaps because I had left the EAS lock button "on" and went up the kerb, maybe she thought we were off to play off road :D

I'll be going back to the same place today so will see if she does it again and report in ;)

You can lock the EAS at motorway or standard and drive normally it will not drop or rise whilst locked. You cannot lock it at access or extended and drive normally. It will rise from access to standard or drop to standard from extended at certain speeds.
 
OK, today I did the exact same journey along the exact same roads to the exact same place exactly :D

This time, I was not locked and in standard height.

So when I went up the drop kerb, nothing happened :eek:

I'm guessing George remembered we were locked at full height yesterday so decided to "obey" previous instruction and returned to full height when I parked on the kerb.

As I thought, she behaves perfectly as far as EAS is concerned :cool:

It's still novel the speed at which she rises up again :)
 
@Doo, I believe George is the reincarnation of a dray horse, was there a hell mighty scoosh when she came to a halt and were many kids washed away in the yellow torrent?
Was there a yellow stain where the problem originally occurred?

You can can take draying out of the horse but you can't take the horse out of draying, lol

No, apart from the gearbox cooler leak, the misfire and the cruise control suddenly not happy, I am delighted with wot I did.

I "will" get to the bottom of this feckin misfire. Although I am convinced it's an O2 issue :(
 
The dray horse bit (for those that are prone to head scratching and feelings of simpleton) is simply a throwback to an idylic era when commercial horses knew their routes to the inch and minute without much input from their 'sloshed' drivers.

ps.ish, I don't think a Lamda is your issue.

What is your thoughts on the misfire then?

I bought four of these....

....and found the leads appear to be in working order as they all sparked (like I knew) properly. Again I will state, the engine runs beautifully hot or cold upon start and idling. It is only upon applying a load (pulling away at low rpm) that I get the misfire, like a lack of fuel, until she gets up in revs to about 1500rpm or more.

No exhaust leaks found (tester was thorough), wires to O2 sensors in good order, leads in good order (no blue sparks). Also a brand new MAF sensor fitted & made NO difference. It feels like fuel starvation in a carb, but surely fuel starvation would make it worse as the load increased (up hill, more throttle and she's perfect. Speed is cleaner and smoother since the new exhausts were put on.

Lambda was 999 and HC 20.

All I need to try next is new sparks, but they were fitted a year ago and have covered 8000 miles o_O
 
I think it will go to extended height with a soft fault. That would tie in with the height sensor going out of expected range.

The calibration block sizes are somewhere and they're dead easy to knock up with a piece of dowelling. Just plug in diag, up to max height, stick them in, press access height and when she's sat on the blocks photo the height readings, program them in as target heights and then back up. Takes about 30 minutes (mainly waiting for the tank to refill as she'll keep venting the tank when she cannot lower than the blocks).
