My pal has just attended a speed awareness course and has returned claiming the instructor/adviser is unaware of the correct limits himself. As a result I thought I would check the limits on his behalf (he does not have a computer).

I currently own a Defender 110 Hard Top first registered Sept 2008 and over the past 25 years I have owned 8 similar Defenders/109's - all hard tops. I have not considered the speed limits for these vehicles would be any different from a car but it seems I was wrong.

If my new understanding is correct the speed limit for single carriageway is 50. dual is 60 and motorway is 70. Vehicle is classed as a goods vehicle <7.5T. I consider I have been lucky not to have been caught speeding in the last 25 years as I would have not hesitated to do 60 on a single carriageway with a flouride special following me!

as it classes as commercial vehicle yes 50 on single, 60 on dual, 70 motorway. They seem to go through phases down here of targeting commercials at speed traps. They catch quite a few

mini busses are different

i just got done in works van

watch out for these

new anpr speed cameras

Where did you find this info from? can you post a link?

I want to check im not breaking the law in me 90 now.:(

Depends how it is registered if registered as estate it is a car speed limits,if it is registered as a commercial then less. For instance I drive a vw t4 which is configured as a people carrier-dept transport confirm it is NOT a commercial and it is due to the load it is likely to carry.

Oh and a hormonal man hating police woman tried to do me for 55 in 60-outcome an apology as mine registered as estate

Doesn't age affect this also?

Something about all newer Defenders being commercial vehicles, and commercials being cheap to tax, but restricted in speed, and other stuff.

I have been advised to refer to my V5 section 4. If the vehicle is classed as N1 (as mine is) it is 50/60/70. If it is M1 it is the same as a car.

My 90 is marked as 'D'...any idea what that means:confused:

Like so much in this country this doesn't make a lot of sense.

My Defender body type is described as Light 4x4 Utility and is registered as a Private/Light Goods vehicle, just the same as my car.

The only difference on the V5 is that it has the addition of a "revenue weight" of 2400KG gross.

I do not use the vehicle for business/commercial and could honestly plead ignorance as I have no idea what it is classed as. I wouldn't call it a "goods vehicle" or "van" or "car-derived van" as it is explained on the "speed limits and speeding" page on Directgov.

Very vague area indeed.
