People Hi,

does anyone know of an internet or published tyres sizes comparison chart?

I am really confused with the size and dimensions comparison between the
ordinary sized (eg 205 X 16" or 235 X 85 X 16") tyres and the truck sizes
number (35 X 12.5 X 17") that mainly our big tyres sized off roading
brothers use.

Mainly interested on the diameter and circumference and ordinary tyre size
comparison for a 35 X 12.5 X 17" tyre but a chart would be extremely
helpful.

I know for example that a 235 X 85 X 16 tyre is the same size as a 33 X 11.5
X 15 tyre but that is all.

thanks in advance for your kind input

Take care

case 1: crossplies. typical size: 7.50x16. rim is 16" diameter (the bit
the tyre mounts on, natch) and the tyre nominally both 7.5" wide and tall.
hence overall diameter is 16+7.5+7.5 = 31".

case 2a: "standard" radials, in EU mostly. typical size: 205R16. rim is
16", tyre is nominally 205mm wide and 82% of 205mm tall. overall diameter:
16+(205*0.82*2/25.4) = 16 + 13.2 = 29.2"

case 2b: radials with other profiles: typical size: 235/70R16. rim is 16",
tyre is nominally 235mm wide and 70% of 235mm high. as above, o/d is
16+(235*.7*2/25.4) = 16+12.95 = 28.95"

case 3: american-style size radials: typical size: 31-10.5R15. rim is 15",
o/d of tyre is 31" nominal, width of tyre 10.5" nominal.

you mention 235/85R16 - o/d for this is 16+(235*.85*2/25.4) = 16+15.7 =
31.7"
closest match in US-style size on 15" is 32-9.5R15

I guess I could have a crack at a chart, at that. gimme a few days, if
no-one comes up with one.

Type 'tyre size calculator' in MSN or Google and you will be spoilt for
choice.

Trouble is you end up with these things with so many bloody variables
you can't work out what you want !

We're still hunting for "9X16" alternatives. What WILL fit on a 101's
rims ? And not look silly and/or need wheel arch extensions.....

Am I right in thinking that 9 x 16 have 100% aspect ratio ?

From http://www.juracid.co.uk/lr/index.php?do=data/britishtyres.html

9.00x16 are 100% aspect ratio which is metric 250/100r16. The nearest actual
metric size is 315/75/16 which is usefully wider than standard.
For other compatible sizes, enter 250/100r16 into one of the common
calculators and any alternative you like to see whether they are suitable
from the gearing aspect.

Hope that helps.

yes.

there are some, I believe, something like 235/100R16, or somesuch.

failing that... something like 35-10.5R16 if they're available. wider ones
are certainly available, but would make steering a bit like work without a
PAS conversion.

Coo:

http://www.bronco4x4.com/

has a thing about "silverstone extreme", which looks a handy tyre, and lo!
is available in 35-10.5R16. 158 quid a shot, mind.

If that's a bit pricey, you can have a cheapo called danubiana, for 86
quid... in 900x16. speed rated at 80Km/h though.

There are also simexes in 35-10.5R16 and 34-10.5R16, but they're really
expensive.

A fair few people have gone for 255/85r16. Its what im putting on mine
once i get round to working on it!

They differ very slightly from the 9x16s (a tad smaller). But are
about as close as you can get while being a standard tyre size.

You can buy this size from craddocks and other tyre places.

Here are some pictures of the same ambi (Hobbes) with bargrips and
then 255/85's on it. Pictures stolen from the 101 list.

Its tricky to find anything with a 100 sidewall in the UK. I've been
looking.

proper 255/85's can be had for £80-£100 per corner, which aint too
bad.

In theory yes.

Trouble is 9 x 16 can actually mean lots of different sizes. My 9 x
16 Petlas tyres were much larger than the mil bargrips that came off,
even allowing for the tread wear. So it can be a bit of fun working
out what size you need.
