Been thinking about this for a while for my TD5.

Is it worth me fitting twin Southdowns? As I know they arnt the largest diameter snorkels so would end up restricting the airflow a fair bit, especially with my high state of tune.

I know there are other larger bore snorkels out there but not a fan of the wing top vent ones, though anyone got a pic of the snorkels that take a chunk out of the side of the bonnet?

So is it worth fitting twin Southdowns? Or a waste of cash?

I would, but others may not, you are ultimately limited by the turbo intake, I think the Southdown has a 90mm pipe and the turbo has a 60mm inlet so you're still 50% over capacity of the turbo intake, I had a quick squizz but couldn't see an uprated turbo either hybrid or VNT???....

Na everything I fit has a purpose, very few things a cosmetic only. It would be plumbed in.

Did a fair bit of research yesterday

While the turbo inlet is 60mm the further you go the larger you need to be to prevent or reduce restriction. There is a mathmatical way but it is far beyond me

Spoke to an engineering friend of mine who basically worked out my 3" snorkel with 3"intake pipe (LR intake gone) dorect to the airbox is good but could be improved.

Twin Southdows (2.50") + 3" intake pipe 34% better flow than current

4" snorkel + 4" intake 56% better than current.

While a nice beefy 4" intake would be nice it'll take me a lot of working out and fabrication as a 4" snorkel doesnt exist afaik.

So gone for twin Southdowns :)

The Southdown is the same diameter as the exhaust, so if you increase the inlet, you might also need to improve the outlet .. Just a thought. ;)

Yeah i wasn’t meaning that you wouldn’t be plumbing it in, I mean ‘what’s the point’

It won’t suck in double the air will it? So will it actually gain you anything? Is a 34% increase in airflow actually going to be noticeable?
I know your landrover is quite tuned etc but will it make a noticeable difference? Throttle response or what?

I am not saying don’t do it, or trying to provoke you or anything - I am just curious is all

Fair questions! Mainly as when I added the snorkel to my TD5 I did notice a slight drop in throttle response and a tad more smoke than usual. From what was a straight 3" intake.

As I am fitting a roll cage at the minute I wanted a decent snorkel that would look good and be relatively low profile (which the Southdown is) however the Southdown is 2.5" not 3" which (if using a single) would work out at around 34% less air than my current set up. So more smoke, less power, less throttle, in theory anyway. BAS have done some pretty hefty research in the area which is what led me to the idea in the first place. Including a few dyno runs, I think one TDCI lost 20nm of torque just from a Southdown being fitted, not much I know but Id rather have the absolute best I can. Hence other talk of a possible custom 4" snorkel in the future..

:oops::oops: i have made an error. I cant fit twin Southdowns with the cage as the heater blower is in the way! It would work without the cage but not with!

So got to look for another solution...

On the south downs site it shows snorkel on a caged motor.
Looks like a safety device bolt cage going down to the out rigger
Unsure how they have ran the pipe work.
Or Get rid of the heater;)
