this is a little thread i thought about last night and doesnt really concern me as ive got the petrol, i used to have a jap import nissan 4x4 and it had a 2.5 t,d in it and had a turbo timer fitted which meant i could set the running time after i had switched it off and left the vehicle. just wondered if anyone had fitted one to their td4s? mine was quite a laugh as i allways had people coming up and telling me i had left my engine running when i had walked away from it. i had a mate who borrowed the truck panicking once as he thought he had broke it (prob should have told him before. lol. ) mine was an after market one so you adjust how long it stayed on for but i know most of the imports were fitted with them as standard.

so is it illegal to fit one? or illegal to have a vehicle fitted with one? my truck went through the mot fine with it on although i did have it switched off at the time of the mot so they might not have noticed it was fitted as the control is mounted just under and to the left of the steering wheel.

It's illegal to leave an unattended vehicle with the engine still running. So it kinda makes the timer redundant unless ya gonna sit in the vehicle until it finishes. & if ya gonna do that ya might as well not bother fitting one..

So its one of those things its not illegal to have but illegal to use. lol. I used to use mine all the time. Sounds like I had a few lucky escapes. I wonder if all the guys driving imports with them fitted know this as mine was adjustable but I nearly bought a jap import terrano which had no way of switching the timer off and the guy selling them was a jap import specialist. Surely they are breaking the law selling something which is illegal in the U.K.

Will work on any turbo'd car but only really worthwhile for a thrashed or modified engine to allow the turbo to cool down a bit before switching off.

Does anyone pound or tune their Freebies enough to warrant one?!

But you answered your own question, not illegal to own but illegal to use, unless you sit in the car till it's done. :D

so where do you stand if youve bought a jap import and get caught leaving it even though you didnt know it was illegal. we all know about having to make sure you have a rear fog but i never knew about the turbo timer before.

ignorance isn't a valid defence

shows how easy it can be to get caught then. i wonder how many people out there are driving jap 4x4s with illegal timers on them that they cant switch off. im surprised its not picked up on an mot.

I suspect most folks have the sense to spot it and get it sorted

always let mine idle for 30 secs anyway, while I pick up my phone, log mileages in my diary, sort out jobsheets etc.

Oh, and coil up the lead for my hair straightners
