Hi all. When driving my disco from cold, whenever the turbo kicks in it makes a horrible squealing noise rather than the usual whistle. This only lasts about a minute then goes back to a whistle.

Anyone had this issue before?
Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

So that's what causes the squealing noise?
Can it be re sealed or am I going to have to change the manifold then?

Thanks for the prompt reply

think it can be skimmed flat, then web between pipes ground away to stop it happening again, its more common in re mapped cars, is yours

Could it be just the drivebelt slipping as the turbo boost kicks in, before you go down the manifold route ? Check tension? and put a new one on and try it then ?

Hi. I will check tension tomorrow although it doesnt sound like belt slippage to me. To be honest I thought it sounded like bearing seizure squeal.
I will check bolts and belt tomorrow and hopefully is one of those that's causing it.

Thanks again

My D2 does it as well it's the exhaust manifold gasket that needs changing, it's more of a screaming whistle if it's like my cars and goes when it's hot?
I've not changed my one yet as I'm scared of snapping studs etc

Hi all. Still not had chance to check anything out yet.
Yes does sound lime screaming then goes away when warm.
Hopefully get to look tomorrow.
Thanks for all your replies.
Will report what I find

Hi again. Have looked around the manifold and there doesn't seem to be any black dust etc around it.
Checked all bolts and they are all tight.
Might just get another gasket anyway and stick it on and see if it improves.
Cheers

Was this on the TD5 that you've just sold?

Nice:rolleyes::rolleyes:

This thread saved me a lot of grief. My TD5 developed the squeal after I discovered that the intercooler had burst.

Just on the output side where the aluminium fold over the plastic part is, the flange had cracked open and the O ring seal was poking out.

Choices..

Ebay £120 second hand
OEM £300
Upgrade £400 +
Glue £20 :)

Fixed that with with some aerospace glue and fabricated additional new clamps, only to develop the squealing noise.

Found the problem on No. 5 outlet of the exhaust manifold. I've effected a temporary fix and doused everything in WD40 prior to ordering the parts to strip it completely in the near future.

For the time being at least, everything is working properly now.

I'm thinking of stress relieving the webbing in the casting, I reckon just grinding a slot should do it. Anyone got any pics of how they have tackled that?
