hi all i have 1994 300tdi manual. the boost on the turbo only seems to come full at about 4000 rpm's. Now i know this is well above what the normal driving rpms are for my old disco. My question is this normal as it seems to me that surely it would be better at lower revs. Also is there anything i can do if this isn't normal. I am a novice when it comes to these might beasts.
many thnaks in advance
alex

No it ain't normal. Turbo should be working away nicely from about 1800 rpm. Maybe you've got a leaky hose somewhere or your wastegate is stuck open. Or maybe the turbo is knackered. Any noises or smoke coming out of anywhere?

hi hughesy haven't got any strange noises other than what disco's make anyway lol. as for smoke its does when you rev it past 3500 rpms you get the whistle off the turbo and a puff of what looks like cigarette smoke in colour anyway. The only time you feel it coming on boost is at about 2500 rpms just before you change gear. I have de egr'd it well have fitted the blanking plate between the valve and hose to inlet.

Peter, i've not long cleaned out ic got alot of black sludge out of that lol. i'm gonna check for a leaky boost hose today. We did get a boost in power when the ic was clean and egr was blanked. sorry for the long post.

thanks for the reply. i will at getting one this week, along with some sheet steel for a few patch repairs lol. Its really daft as sometimes you can hear the turbo at lower revs and at the same time we get more miles to the gallon. Infact but £30 in her last sunday, fuel light has just come on after 235 miles. is that good or bad

to be fair i reset the trip when we put fuel in it then check it when the light comes on lol. its done alot of motorway work this week. normaly we get about 110 miles to £20 thats doing the three times aday school and nursery run. One thing i will say is that its better on fuel than both 1.8ltr zafira's that we have had.

only done it once as i had not heard the turbo before hand. It normaly sits 2500 rpms on a daily drive. low reving diesels gotta love em
