Hi Guys, I'm look at replacing my 90's transfer case with a reconditioned Disco one for lower ratio from Ashcrofts. Can anybody please tell me whether I also need to buy a new input gear?

Use the one out of the reconed box - it should just slide on the shaft - make sure they send you a cross drilled input gear as this helps the oil get onto the main box output shaft better and increases life.

Also check the splines on the output shaft - not much you can do if there worn, but just so you know!

Just changed the transfer case in my 90 over to a secondhand one out of a disco. Straight swap with no probs. The difference is amazing! Drives like a sports car :p Only thing ive found is that you really notice the lack of pulling ability at the low end. When in the wood i now frequently have to use the low box rather than high first. But tbh for the short amount of time im in the wood... the compramise is well worth it!

So I should receive the input gear with the recon transfer case from Ashcrofts?
Is the input gear part of the transfer case, gearbox or is it between the two?
Does anybody know on what page the input gear is discussed in the workshop manual because I've read the sections on both the gearbox and transfer case and can't find any mention of it?

the input gear is inside the transfer box - you remove the round plate on the rear of it, and it should be in there.

The output shaft from the main box goes through the hole in the front of the transfer box (after replacing the seal - obviously not in your case as its new - but you may have to fit it when it arrives - just pushes in)

Once the box is in place and bolted to the main box you then push the input gear onto the shaft and put the cover back on (the rear bearing in on the cover)

And yes it should come with the new box - the old one will not fit as has different number oc teath.

As for the mountings - they should all be the same
