hi all i am rebuilding my 2.5td 90 and just bought a transfer box from a discovery to speed it up a little an to get the mpg down just wondering what speeds will it be able to do with the change of box and at what revs if anyone knows?

also anyone no of any deadlocks to can get for the defender got them on our vans but they where fitted when purchased so dont no the make!

also what security features are best to fit alarms clutch immobilsers or steering wheel locks?

last 1 i plan on fitting a v8 into her after about 120 odd thou on the td will it fit straight into my lt77 box and run ok big job changein a diesel to petrol?

am an appretice hgv fitter soo dont no much about petty's yet

yer wasting yer time fitting a disco box into a TD engine dependeer - the engine just hasnt got enough grunt to cope with it - you'll be forever changing down whenever you get to a slight incline

but if you live in Norfolk it'll do well over 200MPH with the disco tranny box in it
 
It will entirely depend on what size tyres you're running but I wouldn't bother doing the disco tranny box with your engine as sean says. Well worth doing if you've got a tdi or a v8 in mind.
 
stick the box yuv got,n get some bigger tyres if ya want it t go faster.that way yuv killed 2 burds wi one stone,then get ya sen a 200tdi t drop straight in.
 
TD and Disco box plus 750 tyres or bigger forget it,
V8 and disco box is a grand idea but you could go 1-0 if you wanted it all depends on tyre size you want to fit. As for the gearbox you can always get adaptors but its an expensive and a bit pointless. You are better off getting a scrap V8 disco with box to match the input shaft is alot longer and the bell housing is obviously different. Lots of modifications needed tho its not a bolt in job. Gearsticks need to be changed from a short stick to long stick defender type. bulkhead mods, the list goes on and on Yes it can be done Would I do it Er not in this lifetime not when a TDI's are only £250 these days.

I think you need to do alot more research before even thinking about doing what you have planned. Jai
 
hmm thanks for that al leave the disco box out for now. would an overdrive be a good upgrade what am i going to benefit if i decide to fit 1?
 
Hi Jetlad,
The overdrive units are expensive but increase the flexibilty of the gearbox, particuarly for towing and reducing fuel consumption. The GKN Overdrive unit comes with a control unit that prevents it working below 30mph and in 1st and 2nd. Therefore you get to split the ratios between 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th and then esentially get a 6th gear for cruising. But you have to have the grunt in the engine to pull it, my TD5 is very happy in 5th with Overdrive, I've even had it to an indicated 98 (sorry officer).
The overdrive has another major towing advantage, when pulling hard accelerating uphill you press the button and the overdrive engages 'instantly' as you don't need to use the clutch to engage / disengage the overdrive. This means you don't lose any momentum.

I love it but on the downside, 1st) you lose the PTO ability as the Overdrive uses it so no Hydraulic winch :-( and 2nd) They are a lot of money.

well i can get my hands on 1 from a close mate that useta offroad but doesnt need it an its just sitting under his workbench now as he has a disco3 auto anyone fitted 1 there self? would only go ahead if i could fit it my self without any glitch's! sounds a good upgrade though my engine only has 76'000 on it at the moment so dont wish to change engines just yet but i will be droppin a 300 or a v8 in there.

what is the torque output of the 12j td if anyone knows?
