Hi all ..... rebuilding 86 90 ..i`ve done loads ...200tdi engine , replaced loads bushes swivels ect ect ect ...seems never ending .... to find a big vibration as driving ...jacked and propped the landy in the air ...
in normal high , only the front prop turned ..in low the same .. in diff lock all seem to work .

does this mean if i`m not in diff lock mines a 2 wheel drive ( as i suspect). in whch case is it a knackered transfer box ? .
main box lt77 is fine ..all gears work..so i presume its ok .
funny thing is ...even the transfer box seemed ok ...goes into diff locks ok and high and low .
anyone any ideas ?

suspect the rear to be harder to turn mabe binding brakes and or hand brake binding. that would account for the centre diff only driving the front only. The hand brake was off wasnt it? As for vibrations probably one or more knackared UJs. Assuming the transfer box is actually ok with difflock in the open position do you get drive on the road? I think you do with a vibration from your post. I'd be looking at hand brake assy and rear brakes and uj's myself.

but without being there and doing a few tests cannot really diagnose the problem with any assurance can only guess where are you located roughly?

hi .... i think we have narrowed the vibration thing down to ...2 buckled wheels .... the uj`s i have just replaced and refurbed the handbrake so that works fine .... the disconcerting thing was that the rear prop didnt turn in normal drive ..... so was wondering about the transfer box ...yes it drives fine on the road ..ie changes gear ok and has high and low drive ....have only driven it up and down our road ...as we`ve only just got it to the stage of it being able to be driven ..so really the question should be ...when jacked up is it normal for only the front prop to turn in high and low and both in diff lock ?

ah in difflock both front and rear props should turn as in locked together. but again must be sure its engaging light on and defo engaged before ripping the transfer box apart. If it is Defo engaged and not turning or attempting to turn the rear propshaft with diff lock locked then yes its likley that the centre diff is knackared.

looks like jp is looking but not helping ! hahhahah

hahaha!! I saw this and asked Loz if it was you.. get that pile of rust ready and join us on the plains...
forget about the 2 or 4 wheel drive, there will be enough of us to pull you out.. :D

Dont have a clue on your problem, i would just wack it with a big hammer and hope for the best.. :)

hahahahaahh
spoke to local landrover garage .... apparently .. transfer box will not turn both props if its of the ground ...central diff only turns the easiest wheel... they said put it on the ground where it belongs ...if you have all transfer gears ..ie high low diff lock ....IT WORKS !! so thanks for your help but would appear that its not a test off the ground apart from the central diff ...which is doing its job.
JP ..... the only thing this landy hasnt got is rust ! ...chassis is as good as new ...remarkable that the rest was so f....cked .
we will be on the plains prob weekend after next ...my 90 and m8`s v8 disco ... get ready that means there are 2 of us to pull out .
hahahh
