Transfer box filler plug stuck...

Hi!

Finally getting around to the oil leak.

I have deduced that it must be the transfer box (nothing else seems to be leaking badly)

But I can't shift the filler plug :-(

Should I use WD40 on this?

Any other advice?

WD40 is probably a better plan than semtex!

Take it for a runthen try to undo it. The heat may make it Easyer to undo, or not ! Give it a go.

Maybe I'll try WD40, take her for a run and then try.

If that fails Semtex may be the only solution!

Is it possible/likely that someone has put some threadlock in there?
(I've seen hints around the web - is/was it common practise?)

Put your ratchet or breaker bar or whatever on it and try tightening it a little, if this still does not work, put a jack under the ratchet handel and push it up to tighten it the TINYEST bit, then turn over the ratchet and use the jack to undo it. Don't just go horsing it, SMALL moves on the jack.

I liked the idea of using the jack - a bit of mechanical advantage and all that but...

It still just won't budge.

I have tried all but the semtex!

The WD40 seemed to do nothing - other than drip on me
I could easily do pull-ups on the socket wrench!
Using the jack I could have lifted the whole car!

Are there any other tricks or do I just need to bite the bullet
and take it to the garage.

I hate giving in on this!

if you get a good tommy bar with a bit of tube on it put a good bit of preassure on it then get someone to strike the tommy bar on the center (where the socket connects to it ) might take a few good hits .
good to have the tube on the tommy bar anyway so you dont get a clowt from the hammer wealder

At least you tried the filler plug BEFORE you drained the oil!

Could try heating it with a blow torch gently.

Bashing on the front the plug with a hammer may help to loosen it off but that doesn't always work.

As Sirus said, can you get a breaker bar in there or an extension on the end of your ratchet? I use an old 1m length of box steel table leg to extend my ratchet.

I don't know about the blow torch - isn't the hand brake lead in the way?

But I'm going to buy me a breaker bar and a wobble-socket extension.

Whilst I'm shopping, any suggestions of a 'better' penetrating spray?
(I still feel uncomfortable spraying that stuff around gearboxes)

I have an impact driver would that be a good or bad thing to bring into play here?
(Last thing I want to do is whack a hole in the transfer box itself!)

I'll try and loosen it after a 50 mile run next week - hopefully all of these will finally shift it!

There's not a lot of room under there so I'll have to do the twist and whack myself

WD40 is a good water dispersant but a poor penetrant.
Plus Gas is the best penetrant.
GT85 is the best all-rounder.

In the end, I took it to the local Landrover garage.
I was scared I would break something if not the plug or transfer box then maybe my breaker bar.
Turns out it was just a matter of a bigger breaker bar

Next time I'm out, though, I'll take seek out some Plus Gas and GT85

You could try letting the weight of the car do it for you.
If possible jack up the wheels on one side of the car, put the ratchet in place and rest the handle on a block of wood on the ground. Then let the car down gently.
Once the ratchet is under load just be patient it probably will go.
