Trans failsafe prog

can any1 help me

iv got a 53plate vogue and i was driving it and all a sudden TRANS FAILSAFE PROG" came up on the dashboard and it cut out and wouldnt start ,i looked it up and saw tht the battery cud be the problem so i put 1 on it and it started and anything was fine ,i drove home and turn off the engine ,later on i wen to a out in it again started ok everything was gud ,i stop and turned off the engine ,wen i cum bk to it it wudnt start again and it dash sed TRANS FAILSAFE PROG" again after a few goes it started ,i dont no where to start can any1 help me asap

Normally this happens and gearbox eats itself-do a search.
