Towing with an A-frame

Dearly beloved we are gather here today to answer a vexing question. What is the total amount a Discovery TD5 can tow when using an A-frame.

Let it be know that the question is not as mundane as it may seem, as the towed vehicle would be treated as a trailer, but what class of trailer - Braked or unbraked?

Your thoughts dear congregation would be welcomed.

In the UK over 750KG then it's a braked trailer, and I'd think up to 3.5 ton.

Is the a-frame in any way braked? If not 750kg

How do you brake an AFrame? Surely you mean is the trailer braked Because once you attach an AFrame then it simply becomes the drawbar for the trailer that you have attached to your vehicle. Unless all the wheels on that trailer are braked and meet the required efficency then your in breach of C&U regulations. and there int a braking system on the market that will work to the required efficiency. There is only one vehicle that can be legally towed on an AFrame & that's an Axiom & only cos it weighs less than 750KG.

So the answer appears to be as I thought; you can't legally tow a D2 with a D2 using an A-frame.

Yup, unless you have one of those very fancy a-frames that applies the footbrake of the vehicle being towed the limit is 750KG. Even if you do have such a frame, then other limits may come into force depending on your driving licence. If you first passed after 1996 and do not have +E entitlement the max you can tow with a D2 is 750kg regardless. (Want to guess how many big 4x4/caravan combinations out there are illegal?)

There is an exemption for "recovery to a place of safety", which allows AA/RAC etc to use partially braked dollys.
