can i mount a 50 mm tow bar straight onto the chassis at the rear on a ser 3 ...don’t need a drop plate and the trailer I’m pulling is only a half ton won’t carry anything more than a few logs and some garden waste?

The EC Directive 94/20/EC (The standard that all towbars are designed to) states that the tow ball heightshould be between 350 and 420mm from the ground with the vehicle in a 'laden' state.
As long as it meets this you should be ok as it is designed for direct fitting.

And you should put a load spreader plate on the inside of the crossmember, this is more incase someone does a tow recovery in future.Bolts pulling through the crossmember and the ball flying off is not funny. I have seen it happen!

Does it have 4 holes in it already? If so they have anti-crush tubes in so it makes sense to bolt a plate to those (with a spreader on the back) and the tow ball to the plate. The plates are very cheap.

Poke around in the holes, I seem to recall they have tubes welded in. I think you can fit 4 x M12 8.8 bolts with a 6mm x 150 plate on the back that just fits inside the crossmember flanges. (mine has the MOD crossmember, not sure about the civvy) You just need some 10mm plate with the 4 holes that comes down enough to get the 2 tow ball bolts in. I think I made mine from an old mower frame and the drop plate came from a skip.

The funny shaped one is 3mm and flattens the crossmember for the drop plate, the rectanglular one is the backing plate.
