Just a quickie. I have a reasonable set of spanners/sockets etc but the Torx tools are new to me. I want to drop the prop shaft and fit a new VCU in the coming weeks and know there are some Torx bits at the front end of the prop. I think these are E12? I can get a single socket for this or buy a set - but are there other Torx bolts on the freelander? ie is it worth buying a set or just a one off socket for this job? Are the prop nuts 17mm? I have ring spanners of that size but do i need a regular spanner as well?

Sorry - just trying to get prepared beforehand.

Thanks

Gareth

Hi Gareth,

For the prop you will need E10 the front end and E12 the back end. But as has been suggested I would get the set, I was having a look today and noticed a couple of torx bolts that I have not got. For the 17mm nuts you will need an open end 17mm spanner.

I'd get not only a set of Torx sockets, but a set of insert bits too. A lot of trim is held on with TX insert bolts or screws.

Those tools are in addition to your normal sockets and spanners of course :)

Thanks guys - really helpful! Will go out and look for a set. Also on the look out for some ramps (hate working under cars in cramped spaces!)
My VCU is on order from Bells - extremely nice people there.

Yep, well respected on here for VCUs.

Have a look around for Hippo's thread that shows his ramps. Essentially 4 big chunks of timber with slopes on the front. It means you can drive all 4 wheels on and get the vehicle evenly in the air. May not be what you're after, but worth a look if you can find the thread with his pics in it. PM him if you can't.

Thanks. Maybe I will buy some wood and have a go at some home made ramps. I like the idea of all four wheels being off the floor. What a helpful forum.

Not sure what the price of wood over in France is but it would probably be cheaper to buy a set of gold plated ramps over here for the same price as the timber will be;). To be honest Hippo's ramps would be ideal but I just wouldn't have the room to store them as my garage is full of rubbish that may one day come in useful.

One of the most useful pieces of kit I have is a folding "Penknife" type set of torx keys that fit sizes from T6 to T30. I also bought a set of keys & sockets in a steel case from
E20-E24 (Female) and T20-T70 (Male), 1/2" & 3/8" sq.drive. In addition, I bought a set of smaller sockets, 1/4" drive up to E20.
Have a look on Ebay, there are some good deals around.
Er Indoors Vectra has all Torx headed bolts, especially on the engine.

Thanks - i will have a look around on ebay. The French version of halfords (Norauto) seem very expensive so I am keen to shop around

You could also hold the torx heads with an open spanner and turn the nuts with the appropriate ring/open spanner .

Thanks for the tips. Will hunt around ebay as well. Going to see some secondhand ramps on Tuesday - supposedly pro spec but we will see.
