Hi Folks,

I'm coming up to timing the fuel pump and have been checking the flywheel markings. I'm not sure which type of flywheel I have; the early or late type. The markings I have after the TDC is SI | 14° | 16°
and there's no gap between for me to mark out the 15° point.
I'll have to check but I think I have the later type CAV distributer without the inspection window.

Incidentally, is the Churchill timing tool just for taking up the worn slack on the skew gears to help reset the pump timing pointer on the right. This is the impression I get from the green bible. I thought people were putting the skew gear with the widest internal spline towards the pointer then using the Churchill timing tool to rotate the gear 20° clockwise which would mean you turn the CAM and crankshaft, too, which doesn't sound right.

Thank you for your help!

13-14 degrees is what you want, and you twist the tool to remove slack against engine direction and after that the master spline should be 20 degrees to the side of the front stud

here's a few pics to help. The CAV picture was taken before I removed the engine and I'm not sure if you can determine which model it is in the photo.

Sorry to ask James but I'm a bit dense when it comes to markers (this is my first engine rebuild without any prior experience). Is that the 14° or 16° mark for the 13-124v degrees.

Thanks, James. would having an early type flywheel with a late CAV distributer cause problems or is it all the same as long as you get the correct mark on the flywheel?

the same as long as you have 14 degrees with no1 piston coming up on compression stroke, once skew gear is set the pump can be fine tuned by ear
