afternoon landyzone folks

new to site today & now have a second Question. 1st was on tyre sizes this morning.

Just bought an 05 Freelander TD4 Sport, manual with 102 000ish on the clock.

From what I'm reading on the web & here the TD4 has a timing chain not belt like I had thought. Can anyone give advise on when these need swapping or on anything must do's after the 100 000 mile mark. Other info - on start up it all sounds good no rattles, no reek out the back & what feels like plenty of pull under acceleration. All good stuff to me?

Also worth asking while here , what is the usual service interval for these vehicles.

It's not on the road yet am taking time to rid the beast of previous owner dog hair etc & get it shiny on the outside.

Cheers all M

Hi there

the timing chain is a non-serviceable item.

thats the good news

if it gets noisy then you can replace the tensioner guides quite easily i believe although i have never done it.

The only downside to the chain is that if it breaks then so does the engine :)

Service interval 12000 miles or yearly .

Loads of info on here , Things to check

VCU condition ( has it been changed ) ? and bearings ?
BMW crankcase filter fitted ?
Turbo vent filter changed ?
Fuel filter changed ?
Aux belts changed ?
IRD & rear diff oils changed ?
EGR clean / disable / replacement with bypass ?

great stuff guys - thank you for your guidance.

I'm thinking that this is going to be handy site to get some good chat & info.

:)

BMW have been making chain driven engines for a long time, a few of which i've owned over the years with no problems. Regular oil changes will help prolong the life of the chain and the engine in general.

My dad who was an AA patrol always says oil is cheaper than engines;)

Thats why I change engine oil and filter every 6 months , a lot of folks dont change it at all

what never ????

I change mine every 30,000 in our BMW's

going to do the TD4 tomorrow if it rains
