After my home made chain tensioner locking pin gave way, ( lesson to self, buy right tool next time..) My chain tensioner plunger fired off loose in the chain cover. I know I have to take the whole thing off now, but anyone have an idea of what bits I'm looking for now. Can't find a diagram anywhere and don't want to leave bits floating around in the depths..

My apologies big mistake on my part not saying..
Yes its 1997, BMW diesel manual..
Does this help to clarify the components in the tensioner and chain assembly?

I take it it is top tensioner that has slipped. Both top and bottom tensioners have a plunger and a spring in them. The diameter of the holding pin is critical.

Yes it was the top plunger that went, I have the 'piston' and can see the spring hanging, but wondered if there was anything else involved. The front cover is coming off anyway now and I will change the chains as well if I am that far in to it..
Lesson to anyone reading this if I can help someone out..BUY THE RIGHT TOOLS.. Save yourself the heartache here. B######s
