Struggling with timing on 2 1/4 petrol - set it at 6 deg BTDC and is runs like sh1te - really lumpy. However at about 20 deg BTDC is it great - smooth as on tick over, anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Just two thoughts:
Maybe too advanced? Is there pinking uphill on the motorway?
Or the mark has wandered. Just check if the mark is still where TDC is (Get the first sparking plug out, put in screwdriver, turn engine till the screwdriver doesnt go higher)(or as i do, hand crank and change timing, where she starts easiest is normally TDC)
Mine doesnt pink on petrol, but begins too start bad, only on choke (even in this weather). I had her on petrol on 9deg BTDC, but then put her on 6deg BTDC. Now I run LPG, got her on 6deg BTDC but I'm starting on petrol.
btw, how does she pull off in 2nd? How's the botton end torque? Mine got much worse when too advanced.

throw the books away and do it by ear.its the best way as books dont allow for 20-30 odd years of wear and tear on an engine;)
adjust mixture to suit:cool:

That's the way I do mine - the timing mark on my pulley rusted away years ago.

Tried everything and after many test runs settled on 20 ish before - Don't quite know how that works as I though pulley wheel was keyed?

Anyways running well now... DONT TRUST THE MARKS!
