For a while the ride on my TD5 has not been enjoyable to say the least.

It's a 2004 with ACE, 5 seater so coils all round on 18" wheels. The previous owner has installed 2" lift coils and Britpart shocks. I took it to a main dealer here in France in August who said the coils and shocks seemed fine. He said the coils were new and probably needed wearing in? I think he thought the ride problem was all in my head and was probably trying to fob me off. He did test drive it and the damn thing behaved impeccably.

On main roads the drive is smooth but I live in the country with roads just wider than the Disco and the surface like the moon. The ride quality has got worse. Over lumps and holes the Disco thumps about at the rear and becomes skittish. I'm now getting body roll and am beginning to feel sea sick.

Spent the last few hours reading all sorts and then a light came on, did he fit extended bump stops? Could that be it?

Apparently he did not, also one of the bump stops on the rear is missing altogether. Guessing this might have also knackered the shock?

So, I don't do much off roading if at all. I do use a heavy trailer and do drive round badly maintained roads in all weathers. I'm not bothered with the 2" lift, though visibility is great and it does look mean.

For comfort sake should I strip all the suspension out and go for standard? Does the 2" lift adversely affect the drive quality?

Should I just fit extended bump stops and replace the two rear shocks, guessing they are knackered now or am I looking in the wrong place?

Cheers guys

I've got a Disco 1 with 2" lifted Britpart shocks and springs and extended bump stops; other than some steering wobble it behaves quite well. RE: body roll - do you have anti-roll bars fitted?

They may well be HD springs which will give an awful ride as described. Try Terrafirma Medium/Light Load ive found them to be excellent on my 90/110.

Bump stops wont affect ride quality, they are there to stop you bottoming out the shocks.

They do seem to be on the firm side. Thanks for the recommendation. I'm leaning towards a standard height setup so will look at those.

IMHO, standard height is the way to go almost every time. The only exception would be regular extreme off roading.

The ACE system can be a fool, but if maintained, is worth having. I'd check this through very carefully, correcting any maladies.... and then return it to standard height.
