Well troopers

Got myself a thumping headache, and then there's the Freelander ;)

Thumping vibration when on the accelerator, seems to ease when coasting and freewheeling, but still present.

My immediate thought was CV joint on the driveshaft(s), the thumping increases with vehicle speed, not engine speed,
I wont do more than 50mph (its pretty bad) thumping around 3-4 times a second at 50mph, can feel it at my feet and hear it clearly.

I have checked the driveshafts, small amount of play of inner CV on drivers side, not massive play though, not enough to convince me???

IRD is quiet, no grinding or lumpiness when rotating in neutral and in gear.

Im in 2wd without the prop? 87k miles, this thumping seemed to come about fairly quickly

Any other opinions??

I have a spare set of driveshafts, will keep you posted if I decide to fit and report back

Quite rare with modern tyres but we still get the odd one in the workshop: a small 'egg' where sidewall meets tread would give similar although you don't mention whether vibration is felt through steering wheel. Good luck.

if you have the spare drive shaft it would be well worth changing it.There should really be no play at all in the cv joint .My wobble thread might describe how mine felt before I narrowed it down to a knackered DS.

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/new-wobble-thread-96384.html I haven't reread it but I think it should describe how it drove at the time.

hope it helps.

Cheers Wolfy

Im moving house within the next few weeks, timing is lousy lol!

I could have a driveshaft in and out in good time, I didnt want to start hauling at bits until I was certain, so thought I would bounce it off the troopers to see their thoughts.

Ahh cheers Dann

Funny you should say that, I've had a dodgy front right tyre. I noticed the side wall swelling on both sides just after I bought it.
Story goes...I done a cash sale with the tyre place........they said I had pot holed the tyre, I can assure I didnt!
They wouldn't refund or replace, despite it being only a few days old (White mountain tyres to name and shame)

The tyre has been that way for a couple of years now, I eye balled the tyre before posting this thread, but couldnt see anything different than before. No major vibration through the steering wheel??

I will swap the spare over and take notes.

For completeness, it appears the thumping does not happen from cold, but doesnt take long to develop

Right could the thieving gypsy who tried to steal my wheel nuts............please step forward

I finally got this sorted.

4 wheel nuts on the front passenger side were lose/hand tight, one was tight to the correct torque.

I haven't worked with (removed) the wheels in well over a year. I always torque up to 115Nm, working diagonally on each nut, double checking....always, this is really strange.

I can only think that someone has tampered with the wheel?

I'd been away for a short break, where the FL was parked overnight in a public carpark. The thumping came about just after returning......foul play!!!

or you havent checked them in over a year, passenger side nuts can work loose cos of direction of rotation

Yep possibly......but the nuts were shiny on the bevelled mating faces to the steel wheels,

it had only just happened, I'd expect a little rust if they had been working loose for a while.

I had checked the other wheels, all sound?

Too much of a coincidence, if you ask me

Attachment shows the sort of carparks I have to park in.

This burgundy Vauxhall astra was inside a fenced locked carpark, torched, then doused in foam from fire service.

Again possibly.

When I popped off the centre cap the spring clip was broken, literally fell off (had these stolen before).

There also appeared to be fresh witness marks (from wheel brace) on those nuts that were loose

I'm ruling nothing out!
