Disco 4 (LR4) Thinking of buying a D4 - talk me out of it

So looking at getting a commercial D4 (possibly with extra seats) once I have to do the VAT thing

What's the best engine option? Should I do something more sensible like buy an Amarok? Is this a really stupid idea?

Guy recently asked the same on the D3 forums and I said google D4 crankshaft failures, sdv6 crankshaft failures have a read then buy summat else!

Of course they dont/wont all fail, but the lack of engine parts and the price of remanufactured engines should be enough to scare you off.

There is pretty much only one engine the 3.0 diesel 245bhp 2010 onwards and 255 bhp from about 2012 ownards, some very early D4 commercials had the 2.7 v6 diesel carried over from the D3 model, this engine isnt perfect but parts are a lot cheaper.

Any modern car is going to be trouble at some point, so as you need the vat bit it may pay in your case to lease/pcp that kind of thing?
 
I don't think v8 petrol commercials exist. Or do you mean v8 diesel?

Probably no petrol v8 commercials in the uk but there may be imports available, best of all the D4s v8 is a 5 litre not some piffling 4.4:)

Only diesel in the D4 was the 3.0, 3.6 v8 and 4.4 v8 dervs were range rover territory, guy up Scotland is building a D3 4.4 v8.

Didn’t realise that when I looked a while back , ref V8 4.4 petrol , could buy them In the D3 but not the D4

Ah yes a nice 5 litre petrol , now ur talking

Is the 3.6 for for the states

Thought it was for the D3 , derv 2.7 , petrol 4.4

Then D4 , derv , 2.7, 3.0 then petrol 3 and 5 litre, think the 3 litre petrol was from 2014( wonder if that was for export though )

3.6 v8 derv was r/r up to about 201/2 ish i think, then went to 4.4 v8 derv, meant to be a bit of a weapon.

Looking on ebay usa there shed loads of D4 or as they call it the LR4 v8 and the smaller v6 supercharged engines.

Hi mate

I wondered that if some were USA options

Messed it up again, sunshine was out so tried to lift my tyres off to replace my brake hoses , so now back on the #**#&# sofa again for a week or two , drives me absolutely insane

Will try again in a few weeks, only got the fronts and back left hose to fit, then all the brake hoses will be totally finished , then onto replacing my ATF oil , want to get it done before the cold weather sets in
