recently changed the bushes in the panhard rod, fitted new genuine bolts then did a bit of greenlaning at the weekend which resulted in the steering guard getting bent and now the new bolt is rubbing against the axle, any suggestions, what should the gap be between bolt and axle? etc any idea what might of moved

the only thing that would allow that, assuming the axle casing and chassis aint bent, would be a loose or knackered radius arm bush. Give them a good lever with a BIG pry bar, see how much movement you get, at both ends.

Did you re-use the large approx 30mm nyloc nut on the back of the radius arm? If so I wouldn't mind betting that the nut has worked loose as the nyloc part is probably not doing its thing anymore. Nnot likley but defo worth a check. Jai

or maybe you did like i did... and damage the thread on the radius arm on removal, so meaning the only way the nut would go back on was cross threaded.

had to spend a few days with it like that :S didn half squirm when you braked hard!

How did you butcher that??
The thread is so meaty and corse its impossible to go together wrong surley?
Are you taking the mickey??

Jai

no mickey takin at all, fook knows how i did it. Think i bashed it right at the end of the thread where it starts.
Spent about half an hour under the LR trying to recut the thread with a fine file, didn work.

fitted a disco axle anyway in the end, with radius arms :)

i'm now thinking that jai has hit the nail on it's preverbial head, and bolt maybe the wrong way round, can anybody confirm this? changed the nut with new bolt at both ends.

Boydy,

Thats just pure sillyness and as for driving it thats insane much worse than any of Greshams mis fortunes/faults. If I had to drive it I would have either welded the nut on last resort or drilled it and pinned it with a roller pin or split pin so it cannot move anywhere. Driving it like that is plain stupid IMO. Sorry. You say you hit the end of a thread. Thats taught in high school not to hammer a thread as you may damage it. At least put the nut on a good few turns and use that to hammer. I do hope you don't need to do any field repairs/bodges anywhere remote. Even bodges have to be safe. Jai

I agree jai, it was driven across town to pick up the new axles.

It wasn't going to come off though, i made sure - i used a 4 foot lever bar with a jack on the end to wind the nut on, it was only a turn or 2 short of the nyloc and took a hell of a lot of force to unscrew it.

I apprechiate your opinion though, and yes of course i realise that it wasn't secure enough, hence why i avoided driving it like that where at all possible, and fixed it shortly.
