Got the three amigos on my wifes 2001 Freelander td4 !!
Start up all's fine, drive for about 2 miles zig zagging & braking to try and get them to come on and all's fine then about a mile or so later they just pop up, under braking but can pop up on their own ! Stop car, turn ignition off and on and all's good for another few miles !!

Got a diagnostic and it said rear right sensor, tested said sensor and was getting 1200 omhs, changed it anyway and made no differance, also changed brake peddle switch, taken out all the sensors cleaned and refitted !

Have read loads of threads about the same problem but no body comes back with the fix ?????

Thanx in advance !

I dont know what the error code N° was but have a result !!

Took out the abs fuse and refitted, took out all the relays and refitted and the same again in the black box under the bonnet and have a result ! For the first time in ages have just done a stop and start round trip of about 50 miles and little bastides did'nt light up once !!

I've just sorted mine (hopefully) with a brake light switch replacement. The only times I've had this problem (twice in 8 months) was either during or just after towing a small camping trailer.

The three amigos problem is there several causes ? and therefore several solutions, if so is there not a thread that is allocated to these, therefore making it easier for members to track down a solution ?

Every fred I have read the OP never got back with the solution !!!!!! Our's/hers is still amigo free since Sunday for the first time in years :) In the past I spent ages taking the abs sensors out cleaning to no availe, changing sensors, brake switch !! The solution for me seems to be just taking abs fuse out, all the relays including the ones under the bonnet and then putting them back has been enough to clean what looks like a bad contact !

I had this on my old td4 auto freelander I had just renewed the hand brake cables and thus disturbed the gravity sensor that sit aside the hand break I had actually pulled the wires nearly out I only found out after having the garage check it with there tester ,shove the plug back in and they wiped them off for free
hope this helps you out

Hippo was right the bastides came back as before after a few miles driving !!!!! Takeing the ABS fuse out and putting back in again seems to keep them at bay for a few days ????

Them bleddy dambed bastid lights on all the time now !! Spun all the wheels and checked the senors with a ohms meter! getting approx 1.200 that fluctuates .050 whilst spinning.
I have had codes read "rear right sensor" -changed
Changed brake switch
checked all conections, fuses, relays ! It has one of them jobby things for the ABS down near the hand brake!anyway of checking it ?

There are so many fred's on this but little with solutions !!!!!!!!!!

I think I'd try removing the ECU multi plug (fuse removed). You could have a bad connection there instead of the sensor end.

I took out all the fuses/relays including under bonnet that fixed the lights for nearly 4 days the last time to no availe !! Light's on all the time, disconected the big plug on the ABS pump and the lights went out but came back on again after a few miles. I have a scrapper 1.8 petrol with the same system but the lights are on on that too !!

I can't read the fault codes !! I'm in rural France ! My local garage only has a general fault reader for all vehicles and don't realy know how to use it !

Thanks for your help ! Getting urgent now !

So re-cap !
Brake switch changed !
Rear right ABS sensor changed !
Checked wires for HD on gear stick !
Taken all ABS sensors out, cleaned and put back in with copper slip to set gap !
Checked all ABS sensors getting aprox 1.200 Ohms that fluctuates when wheels are turning !
Reluctor rings on drive shafts cleaned and checked !
Checked and swapped all fuses for HD/TC/ABS

Going to go and swap G sensor over from a scapper that I have that also has the same ABS pump/ECU ! What about the ABS pump ? How easy is that to change ? I.e can it be bled "old school" or do you nead a diagnostic tool ?

Can't believe there is no "Sticky" for this one ????? I have read so many freds about this that just fecking end with no fix it's crazy !!!!!

Would the fact that the problem has been fixed but the fault codes are still stored in the ECU bring the lights back on ? Read some where that they were automaticaly wiped after 40 start up's with no recurring fault ?

With the dash lights off messing around with the wires for the G - sensor down by the hand brake cable the lights came back on,cleared the lights by moving wires again, tapping on the sensor with a screw driver brought them on again, changed G - sensor for a another second hand one and put a tie-clip on to hold the plug nice and tight . Test drive, no lights ! time will tell !
