The pressure’s getting to me.

Axle pressure, that is. Bit of a bizarre one this and I might be barking up the wrong tree, but, has anyone ever experienced a slowing-down sensation caused by [possibly] pressure build-up in the front axle.
It started a couple of months back and seemed to coincide with a change of starter motor (only a coincidence me thinks), but I’d experience a sort of hesitation when lifting off the throttle, especially noticeable when going through 1-2-3 gears, almost like an engine braking feel. It seemed to cure itself when I did a hub overhaul and I was dead-chuffed with the return to normality. Then, a couple of weeks later, the symptoms started to return. I took the diff fill plug out and as I did it exhaled quite a lot of gas, so I cleaned the banjo and blew through the pipe. Back to normal, or so I thought, it now reappears every few weeks, even though the breather and bolt are clear.
I might be going nutty, but I definitely think that something’s not right.
Anyone ever heard similar, or got any ideas? Ta muchly.

Transmission brake binding possibly? Feel the drum for heat when it next does it

How about maybe you are stuck in difflock and its winding up? Only other simple test is to jack up wheels and spin. Apart from that its spanners out

Yes, :) Funnily enough, one of our tractors, a Massey 372 FWD has the same problem o_O - the vent pipe keeps blocking with "something", and it forces oil out of the OS seal - and makes a proper mess  ( the CV's are outboard - it's a GKN axle )..... No other symptoms as yet

I know this isn't help directly - but I thought I was going nuts when the axle vent blocks yet again ...

I fear it's spanners out time  , as per post #4 ....

That’s interesting. Luckily oil isn’t leaking out just yet!
Although I’ve literally just had a thought... I wonder if the breather pipe became squashed or kinked when the starter was changed - it is routed up that side of the engine.
I’ll have a butcher’s tomorrow, fingers crossed!

You know what they say about a Landrover that doesn't leak oil ;) Quick slacken of the banjo next time it does it will confirm if you're getting a recurring blockage anyway

Checked it today, it was clear, but I didn’t check the pipe again. Will do that tomorrow.

For what they cost, I would replace the axle fitting and breather pipe. If it sorts it, then it will have cost no more than £10. If it doesn’t, then it’s a £10 “upgrade” that wasn’t really needed, but ticked something off the list.

A blocked breather wont cause drag in the axle, your problem is elsewhere, I would check brakes again. What makes you think its on the front?

Because when I undo either breather bolt or filler plug it seems to cure the problem. I’m going to visit a mechanic friend and bung the old girl on ramps to investigate further. It’s an odd one, but I’ll (we’ll) get to the bottom of it.
