Hi Guys,

Well I just wanted to say thanks for the help so far with the car. She passed her Jersey test yesterday and is now Jersey registered so I can think about the next things I wish to do, as she has passed her test there are a couple of pictures of the old girl.

Jobs completed so far:
all oils, fuel, air, pollen and oil filters.
Hot start fix,
NS rear air spring,
drained and refilled with distilled water/antifreeze coolant system.
Disconnected alarm ariel after flat battery.

Jobs to do:
Netural select switch (manual box)
Drivers seat sponge.
PSI powerbox (maybe).
Rust slow down on chassis.

And hence a quick question/checking of my logic.

The chassis has no rot but a bit of surface rust. I had been thinking about waxoyling the chassis but since it already has some rust on it will waxoyl 'trap' this rust and make the situation worse? Therefore would I be better of as I have seen a forumite mention and just spray on some oil. I have plenty of old oil but was thinking about buying some new cheap oil and spraying that on (so that it does not smell of old carbon saturated oil). I thought I mught buy a pump up garden spray then put this in a bucket of hot water to help thin the oil.

Suggestions and thoughts on this mad scheme welcome.

thanks

Mark

In the old days chassis spray was made up from engine oil and paraffin mixed 50/50. Possibly not a good idea on a vehicle with so many rubber mounts and of course air bags. Waxoyl a much better bet. Do same thing with waxoyl put tub in hot water to thin it for spraying. Pressure wash the chassis first and let it dry before you spray. Or better still have it steam cleaned.

If the air spring was replaced with a new one because the old one was shagged the chances are the other 3 will need doing soon. Not trying to be a doom monger but they do wear at a simular rate. Have a good look at the air springs, prevention is always better than cure.

Thanks fortgrange, you are absolutly right: when I bough the car 3 had been changed. The fourth was not leaking but was definately on its way out. I think the previous owner just wanted to make it all work to sell the car at the minimum cost to him.

well as its a gay38 , sorry p38 :p It probably wont ever go off road

but if it did when you jetwash the underneath you will find that waxoyl and old oil just wash off.

I took the very hard road and wirebrushed (on an angle grinder and flexible drill attachement) the whole underneath off then epoxied it and then stone chpped it with uderseal to avoid the epoxy getting chipped off.

apart from where I have had the jack under there a few times it has stayed on great for 18 months now.

when I do the 72 I will do the same but put on rustcure to treat the rust before the epoxy so there is no chance of it carrying on unseen.

I have to say it was no fun doing it though!
