Hi all, I know this has been done to death in other threads, but......
My ace fluid needs filling, I went to a local car spares place to buy some but had forgotten me manual to refer to. I'm pretty sure the ace uses the same fluid as the power steering, so I got him to have a look in his tofind out which pas fluid I need. He said it was listed as blah blah blah specification and told me that was Dexron II. Another place tried selling me sme LM mineral hydraulic fluid that's recommended for Citroen and told me it was compatible. Any suggestions on what I can use?

For ACE any compatible transmission fluid will do it ... just dont mix various types

I had a mooch through the Haynes manual, they say you can use dexron II or III. Went an got meself a couple of litres and filled the reservoir. I had a look to see where its leaking from and first impressions were that it was leaking from one of the banjo bolts connecting a hose to the pump. Looking closer though, it looks like it may be leaking from just behind the pulley wheel. Is this bad news or is there a bearing seal that can be replaced?

Bad news... as far as i knows the pump is a compact unit so it might be cracked... its working out up to 135 Bar though... first of all check the connection with the pressure pipe( banjo bolt)

Oh well, think I'm gonna get all the leaked fluid cleaned up and refill the reservoir. Just incase its been spraying up from the hose towards the pulley. I might be lucky...... bloody doubt it though!

I ran Dexron in my ACE for 5 years without realising it was not the correct stuff. Dexron seems fine in the powers steering and the ACE.
I sprang a leak in the flexible hose from the ACE pump. Never saw a leak from around it until I took it off and pressurised it with a tester, then I saw the little squirt.

Richard.

I had the power steering pipes split on mine 4 years ago and the independent put Dexron in. The pump started to go recently (after another 30,000 miles or so) and the (better qualified) indie who replaced it reckoned it would have lasted much longer with the correct fluid. What I do notice is the steering is slightly heavier with the Texaco stuff (not a bad thing) and tends to self-centre better.

Granted it is expensive but how often do you need to change it?

The right oil is the way to go, that's what LR specify, so go for it.

Note that in an emergency Dexron III can be used. That's in the handbook.

Because of the different additives and specifications of other oils, you don't really know what it's going to do to the hydraulics, and ACE parts aren't cheap!

Secondhand pumps are on ebay most weeks.

+1^^^, I used ATF once when it leaked and didn't want to waste the more expensive PAS fluid, then i drained it and filed with the green stuff... I can tell that the pump ran smoother, even the recirculation in the tank was visibly better
