Temp guage removal

Hi, need to change the temperature guage on a 1987 defender, do i need to remove the entire front of the instrument panel or can i gently ease the old guage out with a flat blade screwdriver and then push the new one in?

You need to take the whole binnacle off because they are held in place with a "u" shaped bracket and a knurled nut.

Its not a big job only 4 screws holding the binnacle on, would be a good idea tho to undo your speedo cable at the gearbox to avoid stretching and breaking it.

Cheers, did suspect i'd have to but wanted to be sure rather than find out afterwards that i could have done it t'other way....
