Recently purchased an 02 Freelander 1.8 (yeah - I know now). Anyway, temp gauge is just about moving and no heat from the blowers, just cold air.
Any ideas?
Cheers

bonfire, seriously make sure heater controls work and thermostate not stuck open

Heater controls work as far as I know - blowing out cold air. Probably basic, but how do I check if the thermostat is stuck open?

Thanks for the quick reply

piece of wire, bucket and boiling water on p38 ones
or if from cold start it starts passing water immediately

Hi there take it for a run and when you get home leave it running and see if the gauge rises then, a previous owner may well have took the center out of the thermostat. I have seen this before as a safegaurd after hgf repairto keep the engine cooler but all it does is keep the engine on choke longer and the engine never gets to its running temp hence using more fuel, if you get a new stat get the two O rings aswell.

Yeah - when I got back I switched off, left it for 10 minutes and then started it again. Left it idling for a few mins and the temp gauge did rise (only slightly) and some warm air came out of the blowers - drove it again for a few minutes and then gauge back to the bottom and cold air again.

I guess that you have checked that there isn't a air lock in the heater matrix
crack open the bleed valve in the hose and let any air out.

Haven't tried a thing yet - looks like a job for weekend - is there a potential for damage if I keep driving?

Got it checked out by local garage and they've confirmed faulty thermostat - apparently they're gonna fit a remote one (nod to other member for advice - and nod to other member for guessing the problem)
