hi there. Thinking about a new defender!! Had a td5 and not happy one bit!!!! Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of the new 2.4 tdci transit engine defender? Or anyone got a nice 300tdi county to sell? Regards Jim

I've driven a brand new one off road. It's great everywhere except for when going downhill on compression you get a horrible shudder because of the anti stall I think. It's quite unnerving to have it suddenly speed up then slam the anchors on repeatedly. Somehow I think it's smaller inside than my 200tdi. I don't see how that's possible but my knee was banging on the door and I trapped it between the steering wheel and the door. Never does that with my 200.
Never driven on road though so if that's your intention, I dunno.

Here's some proof :D Look how close the steering wheel is to the door. Also I'm quite tall and with the centre dash being so big now, I have nowhere to put my left foot or, in fact, knee.

Thanks Khaos had exactly the same problem when i tryed a friends the other day. Just not enough room somehow!!! Ive a friend that has had to remove the back of the seat so he can drive it!!! Think im guna go back to the reliable 300tdi!! Had a td5 with diesel leaking into engine oil and took to a reputable garage for a new head!! Day after fitting white smoke occured and garage fitted so many new parts and never got to the root of the problem so they very kindly bought the vehichle, which i was glad to see the back of!!

I don't see how they made the inside smaller when the outside is bigger. There seems to be a lot more soundproofing though, that could have made the doors thicker I suppose.

My TD5's great - maybe you had a bad one, I have heard the early pre 02 models had their problems but that the newer ones are completely different. Mines an 03 Defender TD5.

Given the choice, I'd have a new one. Well maybe a year old to avoid VAT. They're so much more civilised. You can even have a radio! I'd say it's worth being cramped to cut down on the noise.

Ive got a 2000 X reg TD5 with 150000 miles on it & it is perfect, no issues at all !

I also have a very good 300TDi in my compound that a customer booked in for mot, clutch & timing belt , rang him after a few days to let him know it was finished, that was 18 mths ago !!!
