I need to replace the viscous coupling as it sounds like a 747 at take off. Before I throw £160 at a new coupling does anyone know of a better alternative please? is electric an easy option?

Cheers

Brian

I think it's on all the time and there is a fair bit off resistance to turning with a cold engine.
Looking on tinterweb they ain't cheap.

when the engine is cold and has been sat, it should be hard to turn by hand, but you should be able to do it with one hand. After a few turns back and forth it should feel a bit easier.
start the car and let it idle for 5 mins but switch off before it gets up to normal temp. the fan should spin quite a bit easier

£150 at island 4x4

Have you tried the newspaper test? Can’t seeing it being much different on a TD6.
They are expensive to replace unless you can find a scrapper that doesn’t charge the moon.
if your not bothered about originality I’ve fitted 3 different types of fan to mine surprised what will fit/work

Just done some checks and it's fine till the engine gets to temperature then it sounds like a 747. Could it be that the fan is reving too fast when the coupling engages?

When it gets hot, the viscous unit should partially lock up, ie become stiff to turn by hand again, this will make the fan roar if you rev the engine.
If you can't spin the fan at all by hand, ie its locked solid, then there's something wrong

It's fine until the engine gets hot then as you say it locks up but I read that on some cars they should only spin upto a certain number of revs which is below the engine rpm. Just wondering if mine is somehow spinning too fast?

Could be, one fan I fitted to mine was opposite direction so constantly locked
I was warned it’s not healthy for it.

If it sounds different to before something has changed

Mine played up so I stripped it off and cleaned it. It shouldn’t have made a difference particularly but has worked since
My guess is the crud on it was throwing the temp value out and knocking it about may have disturbed the fluid inside somehow? I planned to change the fluid but it was sealed unit

It's always been a bit noisy when it comes on, it just seems to be on more than usual. Maybe I've just noticed it more with the warm weather.

Coolant was changed a few months ago when I did the fuel pump. It never overheats, needle gets to halfway and stays there. Think I need to listen to a few other L322's as maybe perfectly normal.

If viscous starts to go you will know when after a good run if you dither in traffic the gauge will start to creep, then settle when you move.
If engine temp is okay is probably your Green Oval Syndrome, then again they do give you signs before they have a tantrum

If you’ve never had a Landy overheat and spew it’s guts up you ain’t lived yet boy :):D
And that’s worse case scenario nothing to be frightened of I assure you ;)

I’d look over the coolant system see if anything is untoward may be putting bit extra strain on it. If you get a cyclist jammed in the grille worth giving the rad fins a wash out for instance

I think I have been pretty lucky so far, head gasket on a Disco 1 300tdi new head gasket fixed that, oil pump bolt on Disco 2 td5 new chain and a lot of work sorted that one. Not noticed any cyclists legs sticking out of the grill but I will check tomorrow before it's mot as I imagine that would be an instant fail for some obscure reason :D
