td6 alternator or gearbox

a friend of mine replaced his battery and ever since when warmed up it wont go into top gear in auto but will in manual
the trans safe message comes up
he has had the alternator tested and its slightly low charge rate 11.7amps coming back through

he has asked around and had a few people look at it and they all say its the alternator and not the gearbox

could they be right

he has been quoted three hours to fit an alternator
that sounds a bit excessive I thought
 
Do you mean 11.7 volts? That is not good enough. Could be just the controller and worn brushes. Don't know the TD6, but time to change depends on accessibility. If you think you can do it quicker change it for him.
 
its a long time since ive seen a td6 engine bay so cant remember what the job entails

thanks for the info though,does sound a bit of a mare to do
 
hes trying to sell me the car
that's why am concerned about the gearbox fault
don't fancy a £2000 bill for the box
 
Hmm Alt is actually not to buried looking at RAVE, still access is tight, but not bad!!

But when you consider it is a tight squeeze in the engine bay, it could be a faff....

its now had alternator and battery replaced and still the same
looks like its gearbox time
I did a search and saw a faulty TF box motor or gearbox ecu was a possible

think im grasping at straws though
 
forgot to say
read fault codes (autologic)
and there was nothing regarding gearbox
its definitely locking in third by the looks of things once the message appears
