My TD5 Disco II still won't go over 2500 RPM when under load. (it will only go over 2500 rpm when stationary) The car will start juddering/kangarooing as soon as I try when ascending a hill or when trying to reach 70 mph on a motorway etc.

So far I have replaced the turbo wastegate modulator and have disconnected the MAF sensor but neither made any difference. What else could it be?

Cheers

Hi there,

My 2001 TD5 was having a very similar issue. Couldn't work out what the problem was and over time it got steadily worse. Lots of investigating later I had replaced the MAF and then took the ECU out and found a load of oil in the red plug. I cleaned this all up and the car is running much better. I have since had the injector harness replaced to stop more oil getting to the ECU.

Hope that helps

Thanks I will have a look. Will be surprised if it's that though but as it's easy enough, I will take a look. :)

Yeh oil in the red ecu plug or a sticky wastegate are the other two culprits.

Are you sure that three pipes attached to the modulator are all good? I replaced it only to find afterwards one of the hoses was split and therefore causing the issue

I checked the red ECU plug and it was full of oil. Spent ages clearing it out but the problem remains. Still can't go over 2500rpm except when stationary.

I also checked the hoses for splits. Couldn't see any either. I'm out of ideas. :(

I had this exact problem, it made me think is was something serious!!
I got a pair of mole grips on the wastegate actuator rod and worked it hard backwards and forwards and soaking it in Ambersil Amberglide, a PTFE based bubricant. I tried the same with WD40 which worked for a few days, but it is only a water repellant after all. The PTFE has lasted months!!

For some reason I thought this was located underneath so I had put it off. However, I have just done this and hopefully it has resolved the problem. It still sticks a bit in some scenarios but not not half as bad as what it was. I can now drive at 70mph! I only gave it a squirt of WD40 so I will give it a good greasing with multi purpose grease tomorrow and hopefully that will be the end of the problem!

Cheers! :)

I was over the moon when it worked and I could drive properly!!

High mate, if you turn the ignition to position II and stand by the rear RHS wheelarch can you hear the fuel pump working?

If you can and the car is still misbehaving, bear in mind that there is a gauze filter in the base of the pump which gets blocked up and reduces fuel flow. Once cleaned, the fuel flow is returned to normal.

I had this problem for the first time over the holiday, plus we now have a rattle from underneath. A bit annoying as we have only recently got the car back from major servicing and upgrade work which included a new fuel pump and filters, so hopefully it is not them.

The wastegate seems a good place to start. I will dig out the Haynes manual out tomorrow.

It would be lovely if one day it just drove as it should without and new (or old) problems to spoil your day. Hey ho, I can wish.

I have to admit I hadn't spotted the last post was in 2013, but none the less the issues in the thread are exactly what I am experiencing so why start a new thread and repeat everything?

An update on this. Turns out the clip had come off the lower turbo pipe which had then blown off. The pipe was reattached with a new clip and all is well again.
