On starting my 1999 td5 on a cold morning,it seems to tick over on 4 cyliders like it trying to stall. When the engine is warm it will run fine.Has been sugested that the injector seals and copper washers are at fault.Slight rise in the sump level as well. The head gasket was changed 2000 miles ago.I have been quoted £150-200 to change. Is this about right?

Injector washers and seals are pennies.
If you have basic tools you can change them yourself.
It took me an hour to do mine the first time but I reckon I could do it in under 30 minutes if I had to now that I know what I'm doing.
Rising sump levels could be a leaking injector O ring but may be a sign of a cracked fuel gallery in the cylinder head. Keep a good eye on this as it can lead to turbo failure.

Is it just for a few seconds or for a long period. TD5's only have 4 glow plugs so an initial stutter is normal.

Just until its warm
How common is a cracked head?I know the head gaskets go as i have had mine changed along with the soppy nylon dowels.Gasket had a small split on the block side.

Not too common but enough for people to have heard about it.
Normaly caused by overheating. Apparently you can get the head fuel gallery pressure tested at a main dealer but I've yet to work out how they would do it.
