Hi there,

I've not posted here before but am hoping you kind people can help me out...?!

I have a TD5 06 110 Defender XS which has started not starting... It's done it three times in the last week now! :(:(

On the first two occassions I turned the ignition on and then the key wouldn't turn any further? On this latest occassion the key turned but it just clicked??

I'm guessing it's probably a starter motor thing but if any of you could enlighten me any further it'd be much appreciated!

Thanks guys! :)

Did the key turn 'all the way' the first 2 times...did the ignition lights dim on the dash?
On the last when it 'just clicked'.... where did the 'click' sound come from?

The key wouldn't turn past the ignition on the first two occasions - the lights didn't dim at all.
On the last one the click came from the right hand side in the engine bay, almost in front and to the right of the steering wheel (I was sat in the driver seat - although that's probably obvious...!) Does that make any sense at all?

Not wanting to doubt you but is it possible the first 2 times it did go past the second position but with no effect?

If so it sounds like you need a starter repair kit like i posted the link to. If you are 100% positive it wouldn't turn to position 3 then you need a new ignition switch. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure it comes as a complete lock assembly and is not available seperately.

It definitely wouldn't turn past the ignition the first two times, I tried several times and it was just 'locked'.

The thing that confuses me is that this third time was different?! Hopefully I don't need both!

It's not unusual for a faulty ignition switch to cause the starter motor to burn out. (specially not wiv vauxhalls;)). I don't think this is the case with you. A new ignition lock with switch is about £30. A starter repair kit is only around £15. Even if you do need both they'll be less than £50 so not to expensive.

Okay, taking what you say as read..... the first 2 times, the key would not turn. If the key wont turn... it wont even try to start. So thats a key issue or steering lock problem and not a starting problem??

You may want to check that the terminals on your battery are clean and greased and leads firmly attached.... take a look at that first. If it continues then look at other options/suggestions off here.

May sound a bit daft but the steering lock on my 90 only locks in certain positions and not when the wheels are straight. This caught me out as the key would not turn past '1 click'. I thought I had a problem then I wiggled the steering wheel to free it and the key turned all the way.
Just a thought.... surely not?:)

'Fraid not - had that before so the first thing I tried was wiggling the steering wheel...!

I checked the battery terminals this morning and they were all fine. The bloody thing wouldn't start again though!

Will start going through the other things mentioned!

Thanks again!
