Need some help guys!! Have a Y2K Defender TD5...just kicked over 300,000km. She runs well, has been treated very well. Only parts replaced are oil cooler, injector harness, complete suspension bushes, ball joints every 100,000. Compression still within spec. BUT....lately losing power when revved anywhere over about 2500 rpm. Almost seems like she is being starved of either air or fuel, and really picks up a bad vibration from the engine. If I switch her off and restart, seems to run fine for a while, but gets progressively worse. Anyone out there got any ideas????:cool:
 
You say that you've replaced the injector loom assuming that this was to try and cure the problem you may find that an injector starting to fail.
 
Injector failure is extremely rare, which is lucky. You really should get the thing onto a computer. If you come here we'll do it for free :) But we are not a stealer and believe in customer service. I would be wild guessing if I tried to diagnose the fault.

Do yourself a favour, look inside the red plug on the ECU under the drivers' seat. If there is oil there you may be able to fix the problem by cleaning the oil off with carb cleaner or similar. Or you may need another injector harness. If you do change it (again) make sure you destroy the seal up in the cam cover. This will stop any future fault forcing oil down to the ecu with the downside of a possible small oil leak.
 
Thanx for the advice Jim. I had initially replaced the injector harness as it was misfiring and traced it to the harness. Did as u suggested and connected up to a diagnostic program. Came back saying EGR valve stuck open and values for the injectors were all over the show. What we then did was do a test on each injector cable from the plug at head to the red one at the ECU and kept getting different values. We sourced cable of the exact type used and made up our own loom from the plug to the ECU plug, leaving only about 4 inches of the original at the red plug and the same at the head plug. She is now running like a dream!!
 
I have been wondering about replacing the wires instead of the loom. I can see it will work, but we just don't have the time to do it in the workshop. Luckily the genuine injector harness costs only half a leg :D

Surely you don't have the EGR connected?
 
Hi Jim. A friend is making up a blanking plate from stainless steel to blank off the EGR at the exhaust manifonld end. The new "home made" harness took us about 1/2 hour to do....sourcing the exact same quality wiring took a while though, as we were worried about any variance or voltage drop if we used any other wiring.
 
Most unlikely the thing would notice what tiny resistance differences there might be in the wires. As long as the new cables were at least as good quality as then originals and the same cross-section area or more, my bet is it will be just dandy.

Definately sounds like an air flow sensor, what I have also had is the plug on top of your air pipe just after the filter.....the wires break (thick reddish/brown one) off inside the insulation just behind the plug when the LR (d)stealers manhandle the plug off for service, fixed it in the bush by cutting the offending wire thru and then joining it again by sticking a piece of paper clip into the wire and then sticking it back into the plug......... but I would rather recommend replacing the plug......
